Crimes against women have been consistently rising in the country. In 2021, out of six million registered
crimes, 428,278 cases were categorised as crimes against women. This marked a 26.35% increase over a
span of six years since 2016 when 338,954 such cases were recorded. Similarly, according to the National
Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), reported cases of rapes against Dalit women witnessed a troubling 45

In a campaign speech on May 15, ABHIJIT Ganguly sneered: “Mamata Banerjee, what is your price? Is she (Banerjee)

increased from 56.3 in 2014 to
66.4 in 2022, the report said, adding that 2022 saw a grim escalation of crimes against women from 2021

case of sitting MP from the RD(S), which is part of the NDA alliance, from Karnataka, Prajwal Revanna, who
has been noted to have made almost 3000 videos of women being sexually exploited or assaulted, is now
reportedly absconding from the country.
Similarly, if we move east to Gujarat, the Bilkis Bano case was a harrowing case from the 2002 Gujarat massacre.
Recently, in January 2024 the Supreme Court squashed Gujarat’s BJP-led government that granted remission to her
rapists. Before the order was squashed, the rapists were released from jail to be received by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad
with garlands and sweets. The rapists were also incidentally seen sharing the stage with BJP MLA and MP in Gujarat in
2023.
Brijbhushan Sharan Singh: Singh was accused of sexual harassment by women wrestlers during his time as
the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Women wrestlers had made serious complaints
against Singh, including that he demanded sexual favours in lieu of professional assistance, molested
them, ran his hands over their breasts and intimidated anyone who tried to complain. Wrestlers held a
long protest against him and the Union government and police’s failure to act, including giving up their
international and national awards. The police cracked down on the protest
Impunity to BJP government in Manipur: Almost a year to the day on which two Kuki women were paraded naked and
sexually assaulted in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, the CBI chargesheet has revealed that they had approached
the police to be taken to safety but were left to the mob.
Modi himself only broke his silence about the ongoing violence in Manipur, 78 days after the violence first started on
May 3, 2023, when the video of the two women went viral in July but also brought up two then Congress-ruled states
which had not seen similar scale of violence in the very same sentence.
After the video went viral, chief minister N.Biren Singh has himself said that that there were ‘100s of such cases’ all-
around Manipur, where women were being harassed and raped. However, he did not say what precisely his government
was doing to ensure justice in these cases.
While the Manipur government in November informed the Supreme Court that it had allocated Rs 5 crore in a dedicated
bank account to disburse compensation to women who faced sexual assault and other crimes in Manipur, it did not
provide any information on how many were to receive it.
Here are some specific examples of controversial statements by BJP leaders regarding women:
1. **Sadhvi Pragya's Remarks**: In 2019, BJP leader Sadhvi Pragya made comments implying that women should not
travel alone, which were criticized as promoting a culture of victim-blaming.
2. **Giriraj Singh's Statements**: In 2018, Giriraj Singh suggested that women should wear "decent clothes" to avoid
harassment, which was seen as shifting the blame onto women rather than addressing the issue of safety.
3. **Maneka Gandhi's Remarks**: While a BJP minister, Maneka Gandhi made statements about women needing to
support each other but faced criticism for not adequately addressing women's issues in a more proactive manner.
4. **Kailash Vijayvargiya's Comments**: In 2018, he made remarks suggesting that women are responsible for domestic
duties, which sparked outrage among activists advocating for gender equality.
5. **Ravi Shankar Prasad's Remarks on Reservation**: The former IT Minister expressed opposition to reservation for
women in local bodies, leading to accusations of not supporting women’s empowerment.
These examples have contributed to ongoing debates about the BJP's approach to women's rights and issues in India.
