Language Focus

A compound-complex sentence is a sentence that has at least


two independent clauses and one or more dependent
clauses.

1.
Independent clause: A part of the sentence that can stand
alone as a complete sentence (it has a subject and a verb).
2.
Dependent clause: A part of the sentence that cannot stand
alone as a complete sentence (it has a subject and a verb but
needs more information to make sense).
Example of a compound-complex sentence:

"Because it was raining, I took my umbrella, and I wore my boots."


a compound-complex sentence is like combining two complete thoughts
(independent clauses) with an extra piece of information that depends on
the rest of the sentence (dependent clause).

to create compound-complex sentences. Use appropriate conjunctions


(e.g., and, but, because, although).
"Although it was late, we decided to go for a walk, and we saw the stars."

Dependent clause: "Although it was late"


Independent clauses: "we decided to go for a walk" and "we saw the stars"

"When the bell rang, the students rushed out, and the teacher packed her things."
Dependent clause: "When the bell rang"
Independent clauses: "the students rushed out" and "the teacher packed her
things"
"After I finished my homework, I played video games, and my sister read a book."
Dependent clause: "After I finished my homework"
Independent clauses: "I played video games" and "my sister read a book"

"Because it was a holiday, the family went to the beach, and they had a picnic."
Dependent clause: "Because it was a holiday"
Independent clauses: "the family went to the beach" and "they had a picnic"
