Text: The English Language
English as a native or colonial tongue covers one fifth of the earth’s land
surface. It holds almost undisputed sways over the United States, The British
Isles,Canada, Australia, New Zealand and portions of South Africa, and is
current in all British colonies and American colonies and possessions. There are
nearly hemisphere: over 50 million in Europe, over 25 million in Asia, over five
million in Africa; and nearly 13 million in Oceania, including Australia and New
Zealand, five million people on the European continent speak English in
addition to their native tongues……
English is at present the most widely studied language in countries where it is
not native being the favored foreign language in the higher educational
curriculum of widely nations in Russia, Japan and Turkey.
English is the language of science, trade, sport, cinema, business, transport,
working tool of United Nations and its agencies such as UNICEF, UNESCO, etc.
English is truly an international language in the world.
