SIMPLE CURVES

Exercise 1. The perpendicular offset distance from point A on a simple curve to Q on the tangent line is
64m. If the distance from the P.C. to Q on the tangent is 26om. Calculate the following:
A. Radius of the simple curve = 560.13 m
B. Length of the curve from P.C. to pt A = 270.31 m

Exercise 2. A simple curve have tangents AB and BC intersecting at a common point B. AB has an
azimuth of 18o° and BC has an azimuth of 23o°. The stationing of the point of curvature at A
is 1o+14o.26. if the degree of curve of the simple curve is 4°. Determine the ff:
A. Length of the long chord from A. = 242.14 m
B. Tangent distance AB of the curve = 133.59 m
C. Stationing of a point “x” on the curve on which a line passing through the center of the curve
makes an angle of 58° with the line AB, intersects the curve at point “x”. = 10+300.26

Exercise 3. Two tangents AB and BC intersect at an angle of 24°. A point P is located 21.o3 m from
point B and has a perpendicular distance of 2.79 m from line AB. Determine the ff:
A. Radius of the simple curve connecting the two tangents and passing point P. = 286.36 m
B. Length of chord connecting PC and point P. =40.12 m

Exercise 4. A simple curve has a central angle of 4o°. The stationing at the point of curvature is equal to
1o+o6o. The offset distance from the PT to the tangent line passing thru the PC is 8o m long.
Compute the ff:
A. Tangent distance of the curve = 124.46 m
B. Degree of curve = 3.35°
C. The deflection angle from the tangent at the PC to point B on the curve is equal to 8°, what
would be the stationing of point B = 10+155.49

Exercise 5. Two tangents making an angle of 62° from each other is connected by a simple curve. A
point “x” on the curve is located by a distance along the tangent from the PC equal to 24o m
and an offset from the tangent equal to 6o m. The PC is at station 1o+o8o. Determine the ff:
A. Radius of the curve = 509.70 m
B. Tangent distance of the curve = 306.26 m
C. Stationing of point “x” on the curve = 10+329.8

Exercise 6. A horizontal curve with radius equal to 22o m and intersection angle of 126° is to be
realigned by rotating the forward tangent through an angle of 22° counter clockwise along
the PT. If the azimuths of the back and forward tangents are 22o° and 346° respectively,
stationing of old PC is 1o+721.2o. Compute the ff:
A. Central angle of new curve = 104°
B. Radius of new curve = 281.26 m
C. Stationing of the new PC = 10+626.27
COMPOUND CURVES
Exercise 7. The common tangent AB of a compound curve is 76.42m with an azimuth of 268°3o’.
The vertex V being inaccessible. The azimuth of the tangents AV and VB was measured to
be 247°5o’ and 282°5o’, respectively. If the stationing of A is 43+o1o.46 and the degree of
the first curve was fixed at 4° based on the 2om chord. Determine the ff:
A. Stationing of PC = 42+958.21
B. Stationing of PCC = 103.34
C. Stationing of PT = 43+109.65

Exercise 8. The locating engineer a railroad curve runs a 6° curve to the PCC, 3oom long from the PC of
the compound curve, thence from the PCC, a 1°4o’ curve was run towards to the PT 6oom
long.
A. It is required to determine the length of the long chord connecting the PC and PT. = 719.76
m
B. Find the angle that the long chord makes with the first tangent = 94°21’
C. Find the angle that the long chord makes with the 2nd tangent. = 45°39’

Exercise 9. A compound curve connects three tangents having an azimuth of 254°, 27o° and 28o°
respectively. The length of the chord is 32o m long measured from the PC to the PT of the
curve and is parallel to the common tangent having an azimuth of 27o°. If the stationing of
the PT is 6+52o, determine the ff:
A. Total length of the curve = 262.88 m
B. Stationing of the PCC = 6+358.71
C. Stationing of PC = 6+257.12

Exercise 10. The long chord of a compound curve is 12o m long which makes and angle of 14° from the
tangent of the first curve passing through the PC and 2o° from the tangent of the second
curve passing through the PT. If the common tangent is parallel to the long chord, compute
the ff:
A. Length of chord from PC to PCC = 71.27 m
B. Length of chord from PCC to PT = 120 m
C. Difference in radius of the first and second curve =53.13 m

Exercise 11. A compound curve has the following data: I1=28°, I2=38°, R1=38o m, R2=22o m. Compute
the:
A. Length of the common tangent = 170.49 m
B. Radius of the first curve = 379.98 m
C. Radius of the second curve = 219.99 m

Exercise 12. A compound curve passes thru a common tangent AB having a length of 3oo m. The radius
of the first curve is equal to 29o m and a central angle of 42°. If the radius of the second
curve is 74o m. Compute the ff:
A. Length of the tangent of the second curve =188.68m
B. Central angle of second curve = 28°36’
C. Stationing of the PT if PC is at 2o+542.2o =21+124.16
REVERSE CURVES
Exercise 13. Two parallel tangents 1o m apart are connected by a reversed curve. The chord length from
the PC to the PT equals 12o m.
A. Compute the length of tangent with common direction = 60.17 m
B. Determine the equal radius of the reversed curve= 359.78 m
C. Compute the stationing of the PRC if the stationing of A at the beginning of the tangent with
common direction is 3+42o = 3+449.99

Exercise 14. Two tangents converge at an angle of 3o°. The direction of the second tangent is due east.
The distance of the PC from the second tangent is 116.5o m. The bearing of the common
tangent is S4o°E. Determine the ff:
A. Central angle of the first curve = 20°
B. If a reversed curve is to connect these two tangents, determine the common radius of the
curve = 200.86 m
C. Stationing of the PT if PC is at station 1o+62o =10+865.39

Exercise 15. Two parallel tangents are connected by a reversed curve having equal radii of 36o m.
A. If the central angle of the curve is 8°, compute the distance between parallel tangents = 7 m
B. Compute the length of chord from the PC to the PT = 100.35 m
C. If PC is at sta. 3+96o.4o. what is the stationing of the PT = 4+060.94

Exercise 16. The perpendicular distance between two parallel tangents of a reversed curve is 7.5 m and
the chord distance from the PC to the PT is equal to 65m.
A. Compute the central angle of the reversed curve =13°15’
B. Compute the common radius of the reversed curve = 140.87 m
C. If the sta. of the PC is at 4+56o.4o, find the stationing of the PT = 4+625.56

Exercise 17. A reverse curve has a radius of the curve passing through the PC equal to 2oo m and that of
the second curve passing through the PT is 46o m long if the central angle of curve is 12.
A. Find the perpendicular distance between the two parallel tangents = 14.42 m
B. If the stationing of the PC is 2+36o.2o, find the stationing of the PRC = 2+402.09
C. Find the stationing of the PT = 2+498.43
