ABSTRACT
This report is derived from a practical experience at work place during an internship training
under taken during the months of June — July 2024 at BBS Terefayina.
The report covers the background on field attachment, principles taught in class and to develop
the students understanding of work ethics and also talks about the background of the agency, its
structure and the activities take place. The report further describes my experience in terms of the
position held and the duties carried out. It points out the evaluation on the field attachment i.e.
the accomplishments achieved the new knowledge and skills such as team work which is mostly
exhibited during the evaluation of the activities under taken, the most interesting activities,
challenges faced and how they can be overcome and the individual perspective for instance the
limited office space to accommodate all the students trainees, the higher transport and food costs.
The report indicates the benefits derived from the field attachments such as the experience and
exposure, it explains the lessons learnt and skills developed. It also talks about the adequacy of
the university in preparing students for field attachment and the preparedness as of the agency to
receive and manage students for field attachment for example through the appointment for the
supervisors to assign duties and guide the students throughout their internship period. It also
gives recommendations on field attachment to the university and the agencies like the timely
provision of introduction letters for field attachment to students and provision of enough
equipment such as computers to students during the training and also necessities for internship
placements of students willing to do internship at the agency.

2.2 Activities of the department and the designation of the person heading it.
Programme production
This is the main area where programming is scheduled and under this umbrella there are many
departments like the technical department where all that is seen on air takes place and this has
13
departments like the MCR, studio and PCR which are the control units for everything on air and
presentation is also done from this area
Presentation
This is the studio where the presenter or host take their presentation from it mainly contains of
the cameras, sound systems, designed background where all the presentation ends and begins
when it comes to the presenter side
Editing
Before material is broad cast on air for example the recorded materials like the news, films,
among others, they are first edited to come up with a final copy and a clear visual and all this is
done in the edit suit by the editors and also here this brings in the graphics people who design the
appearance of the screen of different programmes
Advertising
For the station to run smoothly, it bases on adverts that are used to pay for the airtime therefore
there must be advertising to take place where by all this is done in the MCR that is the master
control room and all adverts are scheduled to run on a specific period of time

20
CHAPTER THREE:
PRESENTATION OF FINDINGS
3.1 New things (experience) learned at the work place that include
During my internship placement I managed to accomplish a great deal of tasks such as Radio
production and producing of radio advertisements plus news reporting, news editing and news
writing.
To know how to use the camera journalistic manners and designing the television script.
To learn more skills about the investigative journalism.
How to use Adobe premiere CC and C6 while in editing.
To learn team spirit and code of conduct in the field.
To understand better on how to write news story.
Learn how to use the different types of light such as open faced fixture, led light,
fluorescent light while in coverage.
3.1.1 Knowledge
i. I acquired skills on how to operate the camera, the knowledge on how you can
shoot the best picture ever and produce good work as a camera person. And how
you can use the iris, shutter and gain in order not to burn pictures and the videos.
ii. I gained skills on which shoots should be took in a particular program or show
depending on the program.
iii. I acquired skills on how to start a project using Premiere Pro and I applied
different effect in the program for example I used to edit stories using Adobe
Premier Pro
iv. I acquired skills and knowledge about knowing how to put in lower thirds and
scrolls while using Adobe after Effects in Production Graphics.
Editing skills
I learnt how to edit footage and new stories on a computer using Adobe Premier.
21
Interviewing skills
I leant how to ask for information front people and how to make the confinable by making them
my friends.
Interpersonal skills
At BBS Terefayina everyone is approachable from the head of the department to the gate keeper.
This helped me a lot in asking whatever I wanted to know and to be confident with everyone.
Camera experience.
I learnt how to use different types of camera, for example Digital Signal Length Reflect (DSLR)
and Single Length Reflect (SLR)
The various camera lenses like zoom and prime lenses
The various camera shoots like the close up and wide range
I also learnt about the various camera angles, for example, Dutch, Low, High, Cut in, Dolly
zoom, TKT angle and many other.
Most of the course units taught to us in the University are very important in the internship
placement as they helped me to express myself in the Station and to bridge the different gaps that
held between the employee and the workers in the Station such course units are Public Relations.
Media law, ethics and human rights with course units I was able to attend to court proceedings,
defend myself and have access to information. With News writing and reporting I was able to
apply the 5ws and H, interviewing and reporting. English language skills course unit helped me
communicate to the staff members, people with the help of communication skills I learnt like
Verbal communication, intra personal, interpersonal, group communication, vertical and
horizontal communication. News writing and reporting with this course unit I was able to learn
how to speech, read and use of proverbs, idioms, smiles, and many am to speak about them I will
not finish them today.
22
3.3 How the student intends to utilize the skills learnt for professional development
For the first time that I joined for industrial training everything was new since I went in the
technical team whereby these things were not learnt before as we were at school and under this
department their is the Edit suit that mainly deals in organising of the adverts and it the master to
control for processing the news before they are aired and also all programmes that are recorded
from both out side the studio and also in the studio when the production side should be on air
therefore this is where it all starts from
For the case of my first assignment was to find what makes these computers at the whole station
be in position but however this was a simple task that I accomplished on time since I had gone
through computer training for the whole of my secondary level and again after ii had ever been
in an organisation working in line with computers communication of which the assignment was
very easy for me to accomplish and raised it with immediate effect .
My second assignment was the hardest that I was assigned to edit a story using footage from two
cameras so for I found it very hard to use both the footage and match everything together for a
day was spent on the same task but amazingly I failed this assignment on the first day but with
time I came to finish it on the second day then I was well controversial with arranging it for the
rest of the days.
Many other assignment were given to me but they were all to be given with in time immediately
since under editing we deal with things that are going on air so they required them on time of
which that is how I have been learning my everything as they are on air hence ended up in
position to deal with most of the assignments while they are required in second to be broad cast.
My fellow workers also helped me because they never got tired of my constant seeking for help
and so accomplishment of the duties assigned to me.
23
By use of available technology, I used computers to start up a project in production graphics
using Adobe After effects and I designed some animations, I also used a computer to edit a
program using Adobe Premiere Pro because Kampala International University had already
imparted some knowledge of these duties assigned to me.
3.5 Problems identified during the internship (work related, affecting the organization, the
workers and student)
I faced a challenge of transport since I had to move from home every day to the station and
sometimes to the field and the expenses I was using were too high because I used twenty
thousand per day for only transport .
I faced a challenge of not having meals every day because we were not given anything from
breakfast to lunch and we used to come in the morning to evening.
Lack of enough equipment in the station because there is no opportunity to do practical things
because of lack of cameras since it’s impossible to be given a camera to do the practical’s since
the cameras are always busy.
Unfriendly work schedule, they don’t respect public holidays and weekends. Most of the times I
was allocated to come also on Fridays to practice more yet I had to be to the mosque. This
therefore made me present by body but absent by soul and mind
I faced a challenge of being eager to have more knowledge about some things within the station
but I could ask some staff members and they were filling they didn’t want to know about what I
was ask
24
i. Time management at the station; every task is done towards beating time and
meeting the deadline since the station schedules are on time and therefore every
staff has to reach in time depending in the department he/she is in.
ii. Friendship; amidst the different tribes in the company, there is at most friendship
and this makes the environment condusive.
iii. Safety in the Station is a priority and they encourage everyone to go by the safety
procedures .The Company provides CCTV Cameras in every department to know
whatever bad act is being done within the station.
iv. Training for quality services, the Station believes in training its staff to avoid
mistakes that would come due to ignorance on air to be heard by the audience.
v. Clients care is the order of the day because they know the client is the boss so
never dream to let him go unsatisfied.
vi. Efficiency at the Station, work is done effectively due to various trainings that
staff undergo into and the commitment they have with their job.
vii. Team work was also the order of the day at BBS Terefayina we carried out
various activities like shooting programs for example Obuganda with colleges at
the station which resulted into a good work at the end.
3.8 Preparedness of the Station to receive and manage students for field attachment
As far as the television (BBS TV) is concerned, they are very willing and welcome to all
students who want to do their internship placements in the station at any department because this
is regarded as a way the Station can reach out its people.
The Station was prepared to receive us and other internees from other university; they had
already prepared to allocate us to different departments on different days and each one of us was
given a supervisor to report to.
25
However the Organization had not yet put some of the things in our departments to use for
example stationary, printer, and photocopier among others.
26
CHAPTER FOUR:
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
4.1 Summary of findings
The internship exercise was conducted properly and successfully, it exposed me to
practicalwork, working experience and creativity which may be I was lucking. Am sure now
that I can face the world of clients and I can do better in communication due to the skills and
knowledge acquired from the training. My supervisor both on job and university played their
roles in giving me tasks which I accomplished plus supervising me throughout. All in all, the
experience has been beneficial and helpful.
4.2 Conclusion
Just to be great full for the existence of the kingdom television like this which is committed to
what they are doing and the love they portray towards interns and care given to them while
teaching them and also that they have all the necessary equipments that are needed by someone
to have all the best he/she needs for a successful training and just waiting to be qualified
somewhere as an employee. Thanks
4.3 Recommendations
4.3.1. TO THE UNIVERSITY.
i. The University should always make sure that much emphasis is put on practical to
overwhelm theory work since journalism is more practical than theoretical.
ii. The University should explain in details the concept while in class lectures and make sure
students understand because what is taught is what is done in the field.
iii. Boost and support the journalism club because it helps students to perfect their public
speaking skills which later are much relied on.
iv. The University should organize regular visits of journalism students to other intuitions or
places where there is a big number of people to gain confidence and avoid panic.
27
4.3.2. TO THE ORGANISATION.
i. Continuously have this program; the program is indeed a good way of testing the ability
of those your willing to employ and on the other hand helps students to acquire
qualifications that the organizations always look for.
ii. Monitor the internee vigorously to enable them perfect and identify mistake done.
iii. Should give more assignments to interns for the effectiveness of the training.
