Chapter 1
Review
People
1. Adam: the very first man
God created; his name
means “man”. He was told to
be fruitful and multiply and
to subdue the earth. He was
Eve’s husband.
2. Eve: the first woman; her
name means “mother of all”.
Eve was tempted by the
serpent and ate a piece of
fruit from the Tree of the
Knowledge of Good and Evil.
3. Cain: the first murderer.
God doomed him to live as a
wanderer because of his sin.
He was Adam and Eve’s son
who he killed his brother
Abel because he was jealous
of Abel’s sacrifice.
4. Lamech: a descendant of
Cain; he bragged about the
two murders he committed.
Also was the first man to take
two wives.
5. Seth: the third son of
Adam and Eve who
descendants were aware of
their sins and repented of
them.
6. Noah: a righteous man
who obeyed God, built an ark
by faith; saved himself and
his family from the Flood.
They escaped God’s
judgment.
7. Shem, Ham, and Japheth:
Noah’s three sons who
repopulated the world after
the Flood.
8. Nimrod: a mighty hunter
who encouraged the people
to build the Tower of Babel.
Descendant of Noah’s son
Ham. He and his followers
were humanists.
Places
1. Shinar: the plain where
Noah’s family and his
descendants lived. Also
known in the world as Sumer.
2. Babel: the city in Shinar
where the tower of Babel
was built. People tried to
build a tower to Heaven in
Genesis 11:1-9. All people
spoke the same language
until God confused their
languages so that this work
would not be completed.
Events
1. First Human Sin: Adam and
Eve disobeyed God’s
command; perfect equality
ended, man was removed
from the garden, all men
would now sin and die.
2. The Flood: God’s
punishment for the height of
evil man had reached;
destroyed the whole earth,
except Noah and his family.
3. The Tower of Babel:
Nimrod and other men
decided to build a tower up
to Heaven, but God confused
man’s language. This caused
men to disperse.
Terms
1. Genesis: the first book of
the Bible; means the
“beginning”.
2. Evolution: the idea that
man was not created directly
by God but instead “evolved”
from the animals.
3. Humanism: putting man in
the place of God.
4. Culture: the way of life of a
group of people.
5. Capital punishment: the
death penalty.
6. Nation: a group of people
who think of themselves as
one and act in history as a
unit.
Concepts to Consider
1. Explain how man, being
created in God’s image is
special to God.
Man is special to God
because only man is created
in God’s image. Man’s special
characteristics include
language and thought,
awareness of the difference
between right and wrong,
and FREEDOM TO MAKE
CHOICES.
2. How is evolution a form of
humanism?
Evolution downplays man’s
special characteristics.
3. Why do you suppose God
confused man’s language and
dispersed mankind across
the face of the earth? After
the Flood, God commanded
mankind to multiply and fill
the earth, but mankind
disobeyed and remained in
the region of Sumer. There
they began to build a
civilization in rebellion
against God. To restrain sin
and to slow the growth of
human power, God
intervened and confused
man’s language.
Map Review
“The "Fertile Crescent,"
often referred to as the
"cradle of civilization,"
refers to a semi-circular
area of the eastern
Mediterranean region,
including the valleys of
the Nile, Tigris and
Euphrates rivers. The
region includes parts of
the modern countries of
Israel, Lebanon, Jordan,
Syria, northern Egypt,
and Iraq, and the
Mediterranean Sea coast
lies to its west. To the
south of the arc is the
Arabian Desert, and at
its southeast point is the
Persian Gulf.
Geologically, this region
corresponds with the
intersection of the
Iranian, African, and
Arabian tectonic plates.”
