Folder (GPO)
Understand the importance of redirecting folders and documents
Learn the steps on how to deploy Printers using Group Policy

In the world of network computing it is very common for computers to

encounter problems, some computers suddenly won't boot up, others have corrupted
data with no backup. These combination of issues can be very frustrating and can
be very expensive fix.
The good news is that there is something you can do to avoid losing your
irreplaceable data. Folder Redirection in Group Policy. Before we start with Folder
Redirection, you will need to be running Active Directory, have an available file
server, and a management station running the Group Policy. These should be a basic
network requirement even for small businesses just to make sure that all their data
is safe and secured. So what exactly does Folder Redirection do?

Folder Redirection enables users and administrators to redirect the path of

a known folder to a new location, manually or by using Group Policy. The new
location can be a folder on the local computer or a directory on a file share. Users
interact with files in the redirected folder as if it still existed on the local drive. For
example, you can redirect the Documents folder, which is usually stored on a local
drive, to a network location. The files in the folder are then available to the user from
ANY COMPUTER on the NETWORK.

As of Windows Server 2008 R2, the folders you can redirect are as follows:

- Appdata (Roaming) - Favourites

- Desktop - Contacts
- Start Menu - Downloads
- Documents - Links
- Pictures - Searches
- Music - Saved Games
- Videos

Two main methods of redirecting a folder

Firstly, you can configure a policy to redirect all users’ folders to the same
place. Alternatively, you can redirect folders based on group membership of the
logged on user.

Redirected Folders Interface

You can redirect each of the above folders to the following places:
 A subfolder named after a username, created in a folder you specify
 A specifically specified folder.
 The default location (in the local user profile)

Things to note before we set up folder redirection.

1. For the following example we will be using the created users from the previous
lesson. (MendozaJ and Neutron1).
2. We will also be using an Organizational Unit named (CSS1).

3. Then inside the OU, a GPO named (Test FR) was also created for the two users.
Note: The procedures on how to create numbers 1-3 is available on your previous modules.
How to redirect folders?

1. First thing we need to do is to create a root folder on your server. In this

example, we created the folder (Folder Redirection) on the local drive C:

2. Share the folder so it will be available on the network. Right click the folder
then select properties, then go to Sharing tab so you could select Advanced
Sharing.
3. On the next window, tick the “Share this folder, then click on Permissions.

4. On the Permissions folder, Remove the Group “Everyone” by clicking on

Remove. Once removed, Click Add, then type “Domain Users” on the next
window. This means that the folder can only be seen by members of the
Domain.
5. To apply the changes. Click Ok – Apply – and then Close.
6. Make sure to copy the network path of this folder as this will be used later on.

7. Once all this is done. Navigate to your Organizational Unit (CSS1), Right click
then select Edit.

8. After selecting edit, the Group Policy Editor will open.

9. To redirect the Documents folder, navigate to User Configuration\
Policies\Windows Settings\Folder Redirection, then right click on
Documents and choose Properties.

10. On the settings menu, click the drop down button then select “Basic –
Redirect everyone’s folder to the same location”. Keep target folder location as
it is. Then type or paste the network path of your folder (Folder Redirection)
on the root path. Click Apply and your done.
11. To check if the configuration took effect, simply login the user within
the Organizational Unit where you created the GPO on any client computer.
After logging in, go back to the Server where you created the folder “Folder
Redirection. Here you will see the redirected Documents folder of the user
MendozaJ.

HOME FOLDERS

A home folder is a private network location where users can store personal
files. It is stored in a shared folder on a network server. When you create the home
folder on a network server, users can access it from any computer on the network.
Administrators can use this centralized storage area to easily backup important
network files. Users from any version of Windows can access their home folders.
Home Folders work a lot like Folder Redirections, but with home folder, you can
easily locate your files as it is represented by a local drive icon on the client computer.

How to create a Home Folder?

1. The first step in creating a Home Folder is a lot like Folder Redirection. You
must create a root folder where your files will be saved. In this example we will
be using the folder name “Home Folder”.
2. Just like in Folder Redirection. You have to share the Home Folder to the
domain users.
3. Copy the network path of this folder.

4. Once shared. Navigate to your Active Directory Users and Computers located
on your Server Manager dashboard.

5. Right click on the user profile where you want to create a Home Folder then
select Properties.
6. On the User Properties, go to Profile. Then select the Connect button for Home
Folder, select any Drive letter that you want to use.

7. Now, type in the Network path that you saved earlier, you can add the
command \%username% to have your username appear on your Home
Folder. Click Apply once done.
8. To check if the configuration was successful, login to the user profile where
you created the Home Folder.
9. You will notice that a new drive has been created on your Network locations
with the selections you’ve made earlier.
