Classify that Type of Natural Selection!
Based on the scenarios given below, classify the selection as directional, disruptive or stabilizing selection. Justify
your answer.

1. Pesticides such as DDT kill unwanted organisms that are found in one’s yard. Those that survive pass on their
resistant genes.

directional

2. Human babies that are either too light or too heavy at birth have a lower chance of survival in comparison to
the mid-sized babies.

stabilizing

3. Farmers select for the desired trait of juicy corn kernels in their crops. They select corn plants that will
produce this desired trait.

directional

4. Industrial melanism – the change in colouration of peppered moths from white to black as a result of
industrialization and pollution

directional

5. In a species of African butterfly Pseudacraea eurytus, the colorations range from a reddish yellow to blue.
Red-yellow and blue coloration give the species an advantage in their specific environment, as the butterflies
are able to mimic other species of butterflies that are not prey to the local predators.

Disruptive/diversifying

6. Antibiotics treat individuals by killing pathogenic bacteria. Those bacteria that resist antibiotics and survive
will continue to infect the population.

directional

7. Taller plants outcompete shorter plants in the forest as they are able to obtain more sunlight for photosynthesis
and growth.

directional

8. Cheetah breeders carefully select particular cheetahs that run 120km/hr. These parents produce cheetahs that
also run 120km/hr or more.

directional

9. The Siberian Husky is a medium dog, males weighing 16-27kg (35-60lbs). These dogs have strong pectoral
and leg muscles, allowing it to move through dense snow. The Siberian Husky is well designed for working in
the snow. If the Siberian Husky had heavier muscles, it would sink deeper into the snow, so they would move
slower or would sink and get stuck in the snow.
