1. Tell me about yourself.

I graduated from Dhaka University, where I majored in Physics with a specific interest in material
research. The field is so aligned with technologies and applied science that intrigued me since
my high school days such as, sensors in smart phones and shopping mall doors, solar panels in
rural areas of my country and ultrasonogram machine at the hospitals etc.

My interest got intensified by learning that this field deals with every aspect related to the
enhancement of the performance of existing technologies and to apply those techs for the
betterment of biological and artificial systems. And most importantly, addresses to the problems
that our planet earth is going through, whether it is energy crisis, waste management or
pollution control.

To become a part of this research community I joined material science division at Bangladesh
Atomic Energy Center as a research student that also helped me with my MS thesis. There, I
learned nanomaterial synthesis process and analysis of sample characterization techniques such
as FTIR, XRD, SEM etc. At this stage of my academic life, I started teaching physics to high school
students and helping sophomores of my university to navigate through their course works by
discussion.

I first became interested in biophysics after I joined as a lecturer at Barishal University. Here,
there is very limited experimental facility which compelled me to focus more on simulation-
based works. Fortunately, in my department there is a group working on membrane biophysics
in collaboration with Bangladesh university of Engineering and Technology, BUET. After I started
working with the group, I got fascinated how a simple physics law can generate remarkable
research outcome. Also, I have pedagogical responsibilities at my department. These duties are
assisting me to connect and share ideas with my students which I really love and cherish.

2. Why do you want to become a graduate student/assistant?

3. Your feeling for becoming a student again?

The way I figure, I have always been a student of Physics and probably always will be. Even after
my PhD, I don’t think that I will put an end to the process of learning. As far as being a student
of a school, that is totally cool with me.
4. Tell me about your future goal after the PhD.
After my PhD, I will return to Bangladesh and continue my pedagogical career with new skills in
advanced research achieved during my PhD. My goal would be to give my students more
opportunities to participate in collaborative research projects with esteemed institutions like
GSU and continue my research to explore new scientific ideas and try to find scientific solutions
to problems on a national and international scale.

5. Why you applied GSU?

It is completely based on my research interest. I have found that Georgia State University has
research facilities with excellent supervision of ingenious faculty members, specially in the field
of condensed matter physics and biophysics. And based on my merit level, I believe Georgia State
University’s graduate program is a perfect fit for me.

6. Why you choose Physics/material science PhD program?

The world is going through the 4th industrial revolution that conceptualises the rapid change in
technologies, industries and societal way of living and blurring the line among physical, digital
and biological realms. In this situation, we require high performance electronic materials and
the understanding of biological systems to implement it in far more richer applications. GSU has
that kind of laboratory facilities to conduct the research for these applications. And I think if I
am accepted for this program, I will try my best with integrity and hard work to contribute to
those research that addresses these new challenges to the humanity.

7. Questions?
i) If I am accepted, what is expected from me as a graduate student?
ii) To hastings: You have already used FTIR microspectroscopy method to monitor and
analyze the accumulation of lipid, protein and carbohydrate in intact algal cells. Do you
have any research plan for FTIR study of SARS Covid-19 virus? Already been done in 2021
by a group of Brazil.
iii) To Lei: I really enjoyed your paper on the surface tension effect on graphene. Here,
mixture of Isopropanol and Deionized water was used to tune the surface tension. Can
Diethyl ether be used to increase the surface tension gap?
iv) Thank everyone.
