Roles of Technology
for Teaching and
Learning
Focus Question

Recall specific ways by which the use of

educational technology helped you learn.
Roles of Technology

Traditional Way

The learners learn from the

technology and the technology
serves as a teacher.

Learners learn from the content

presented by the technology in the
same way that the learner learns
knowledge from the teacher.
Roles of Technology

Constructivist Way

The technology is a learning tool to

learn with, not from.

It makes the learner gather, think

analyze, synthesize information,
and construct meaning with what
technology presents.
3 Domains of Educational Technology
According to Stosic (2015), educational technology has
three domains, and these are:

Technology as a tutor
Technology as a teaching tool
Technology as a learning tool
3 Domains of Educational Technology

Technology as a tutor.
▪ Technology can support the teacher to teach
another person.

▪ Teacher can simply switch on and off radio and

television programs, DVDs, and CDs.

▪ It also includes online tutorial educational

programs.
3 Domains of Educational Technology

Technology as a teaching tool.

▪ Technology is used to facilitate and
lighten the work of the teacher.

▪ It will be good if the teacher can create

or develop technology tools that are
needed in the classroom.
3 Domains of Educational Technology

Technology as a learning tool.

▪ Technology serves as a context to

support learning-by-doing.

▪ Technology serves as information

vehicle for exploring knowledge to
support learning-by-constructing.
Technology for Teachers and Teaching
1. Technology provides enormous support to the teacher as
the facilitator of learning.

It transforms a passive
classroom to an active and
interactive one with the use of
audio-visual aids, charts, etc.

It also helps motivate and

increase attention of learner.
Technology for Teachers and Teaching
2. Technology has modernized the teaching-learning
environment.

Teachers are assisted and

supplemented with appropriately
structured instructional materials
for daily activities and enrichment.
Technology for Teachers and Teaching
3. Technology improves teaching-learning process and ways
of teaching.

There are arrays of teaching

methods that can use technology
that is compatible with learning
styles.
Technology for Teachers and Teaching

4. Technology opens new fields in educational researches.

Current educational researchers

will no longer find difficulty in
interpreting tests, assessments,
and other evaluation results
because of technology.
Technology for Teachers and Teaching
5. Technology adds to the competence of teachers and
inculcates scientific outlook.

The teachers are encouraged to

imbibe skills to source online
information with speed and
accuracy.
Technology for Teachers and Teaching

6. Technology supports teacher professional development.

With the demand of continuing

professional development for
teachers, technology provides
alternative way of attending
professional development online.
Technology for Learners and Learning

1. Support learners to learn how to learn on their own.

Teachers can suggest educational

technologies that can guide
learners to look for resources and
utilize them appropriately in order
to acquire knowledge.
Technology for Learners and Learning
According to Egbert (2009), there are three categories of
knowledge, and these are:

1. Declarative Knowledge

2. Structural Knowledge

3. Procedural Knowledge
Technology for Learners and Learning

1. Declarative Knowledge

▪ answers the questions what,

who, when, and where.

▪ often learned through

memorization of facts, drills,
and practice.
Technology for Learners and Learning

2. Structural Knowledge

▪ consist of facts or pieces of

declarative knowledge put
together to attain some form
of meaning

▪ it can be presented by
concept maps, categorization
and classification
Technology for Learners and Learning

3. Procedural Knowledge

▪ also known as knowledge in

action or knowledge of how to do
something. It is based on facts but
learned through the process of
procedures.

▪ is indicated by a performance task

or graphical representation of a
concept.
Technology for Learners and Learning
2. Technology enhances learners’ communication skills
through social interactions.

Through social interactions,

learners can clarify, argue,
challenge each other, and work
towards common understanding.
Technology for Learners and Learning
According to Shirly (2003) and Egbert (2009), there are
three basic communication patterns, and these are:

1. Point to point two-way or one-to-one – Internet chat,

phone conversation, or face-to-face conversation

2. One-to-many – lecture, or television (no social interaction)

3. Many-to-many – group discussions, buzz session, heads

together

3. Technology upgrades learners’ higher-order thinking
skills: critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity.

Critical thinking – ability to interpret,

explain, analyze, evaluate, and infer in
order to make good decisions.

With the use of technology, one can

evaluate the credibility of the source,
defend a position, and become open
minded.

3. Technology upgrades learners’ higher-order thinking
skills: critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity.

Problem-solving – is the process of

identifying a problem, developing
possible solution paths, and taking the
appropriate course of action.

Technology enables you to identify

problems quicker and easier and helps
you better analyze a complex problem.
Technology for Learners and Learning
3. Technology upgrades learners’ higher-order thinking
skills: critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity.

Creativity – is the ability to think flexibly,

fluently, originally, and elaborately.

Flexibly – use many viewpoints

Fluently – generate many ideas
Originally – generate new ideas
Elaborately – add details
