SURFACE WATER DRAINAGE SYSTEM

01.01 Description:

This work shall consist of the construction of reinforced concrete side walk inlets, precast concrete covers,
cast in-siln concrete chutes, flood production protection ditches (channels), grounded riprap ditch lining,
surface water drainage pipe culverts including 20cm concrete surround, mortared riprap slope protection
at inlets and outlets, all in accordance with the specification, drawings and as directed by the Engineer.

01.02 Materials

Where materials, manufacture and workmanship of items in these works are not described in this section,
the relevant specification in other sections of this document shall be deemed to apply.

01.03 Stone for riprap:

Stone for mortared Riprap shall consist of field stones furnished in broad flat shapes to maximum extent
practicable. all stone shall be hard, sound, durable, highly resistant to weathering and shall be suitable as
protection material for the intended purpose.
Samples of the stone material proposed for use in works shall be submitted to the Engineer for approval
prior to its use in the works. Each stone shall weigh between 20 and 70kg and at least 60% shall weigh
more than 45kg.

01.04 Construction requirement

01.04.01 Excavation:

Ditch excavation shall conform to the requirements of line relevant section for ‘Excavation for structures‘

The subgrade for the ditch lining shall be excavated to a smooth surface parallel to the proposed finished
surface and to a depth sufficient for the full thickness of the lining. Soft, unstable sub grade material
approved by the Engineer. The subgrade shall be firm and compacted as approved by the Engineer.

01.04.02 Stone ditch lining:

(a) The stones shall be placed in rows transversely to the centerline of the ditch in the manner indicated on
the plans or as directed by the Engineer. The stones shall be placed with ends and sides abutting the
joints in the preceding row. The larger spaces between stones shall be filled with spails. The stones shall
be rammed or compacted to give them firm bearing and stability.

(b) After the surface has been inspected and approved, the spaces between stones shall be completely
filled with a grout. Composed of one (1) part of Portland cement and three (3) parts of fine aggregates
mixed with sufficient water to produce a plastic mortar. The grout shall be brushed or broomed into the
spaces to insure proper filling.

The grout shall be protected from the sun and help moist for at least three days after application.
