Problem Statement Details
● Many neighborhoods have limited waste management options, often restricted to basic
recycling, if any at all.
● A significant portion of waste ends up in landfills, where it decomposes anaerobically and
releases methane and other greenhouse gases.
● Organic waste from households and businesses contributes to greenhouse gas emissions
due to improper disposal methods.
● Plastic and textile waste adds to environmental pollution, with few options available for
recycling or reuse.
● This situation reflects a disconnect between the generation of waste and sustainable
disposal practices within communities.
● There is a pressing need for a community-centered solution that:
○ Transforms waste into usable resources.
○ Encourages local involvement and responsibility in waste management.
○ Raises environmental awareness and fosters sustainable practices among residents.

Use Cases for Neighborhood-Based
Zero-Waste Incubators
Organic and Biodegradable wastes

⮚Localized Organic Waste Management

● Scenario: Residents in a neighborhood or apartment complex contribute their kitchen scraps and yard
trimmings to a community composting system within the incubator.

● Outcome: Organic waste is converted into compost on-site, which is distributed back to residents or
used in local green spaces, reducing landfill contributions and supporting urban greenery.

⮚Community Biogas Production

● Scenario: Organic waste from households and nearby businesses is processed into biogas, which can
be used to power community facilities or given back to contributors.

● Outcome: Residents and businesses benefit from a renewable energy source, while greenhouse gas
emissions from decomposing organic waste are minimized.

⮚Recycling and Repurposing Plastic and Textile Waste

● Scenario: Residents and businesses contribute plastic and textile waste to the incubator. This waste is
shredded and repurposed as building insulation, garden bed lining, or materials for community art
projects.
● Outcome: Non-recyclable materials gain a second life within the community, reducing pollution and
creating functional, sustainable materials for local projects.

Real case examples

Urban Neighborhood with Limited Recycling Options:

In many urban areas, residents have limited access to recycling facilities
or composting programs. For instance, in an apartment complex or densely populated neighborhood, an
incubator could be set up to collect organic waste from residents. Instead of sending food scraps to landfills,
the waste would be processed into compost or biogas on-site. The compost could then be distributed to
community gardens or green spaces, while the biogas could be used to power local initiatives, such as
streetlights or community centers.

Example: A city neighborhood with high-rise buildings could use rooftop spaces for the incubator's
operations, composting organic waste from tenants and using the resulting compost for rooftop gardens or
green infrastructure projects.
