About This Package
Multi-Digit Multiplication is one of the most difficult concepts that we face as math teachers. It can be
confusing, frustrating, and difficult to teach and to learn.

Luckily, there are strategies that we can teach to help with this!

This package includes practice pages for a number of effective alternatives for traditional long multiplication.

Enjoy!

Shelley

BREAKING UP numbers
We can break up numbers to make them easier to work with. This helps us solve
equations that we might not be able to solve in our heads otherwise. Take a look!
Suppose we want to solve this equation: 11x30. We could break up the 11 into a 10 and a 1:
11 x 30
We can break the 11 up into a 10
10x30 1x30 and a 1, and multiply both of
those numbers by 30.

300 30
Then we can add the products
together.
330

Now it’s your turn to try!

11 x 19 11 x 24 11 x 65

The Box/window method for
2-Digit by 2-Digit Equations
Drawing a box or window helps us to see what we are multiplying.

42x23 Step 1: Draw a box or window. If you are multiplying a 2-

20 3 digit by 2-digit number, you’ll need 2 rows and 2 columns.

40x20= 40x3= Step 2: Write the numbers from the equation in expanded
40 800 120 form along the top and left sides.

Step 3: Multiply the numbers that “meet” in each box.

2x20= 2x3=
2 40 6 Step 4: Add the numbers from each box.

800+120+40+6=966

Now it’s your turn! Remember to follow these steps:

1. Use expanded form to write the numbers along the grid.
2. Multiply the numbers that “meet” in each space.
3. Add the total “areas” from each part of the grid.

64x21 Add the numbers from each box:

Final answer: 64x21=_____

35x32 Add the numbers from each box:

Final answer: 35x32=_____

Practicing The Box/window
method
Let’s keep practicing the box or window method.
Add the Add the
43x29 numbers:
30x25 numbers:

Final answer: Final answer:

43x29=_____ 30x25=_____

Add the Add the

33x47 numbers:
52x83 numbers:

Final answer: Final answer:

33x47=_____ 52x83=_____

What if you have bigger numbers? Just make a bigger box!

45x241 16x123

Add the numbers: Add the numbers:

Final answer: 45x241=______ Final answer: 16x123=______

LEARNING partial products
Partial products is another way to multiply bigger numbers. We multiply the numbers in
parts. Let’s start with 2-digit by 1-digit equations.

Suppose we want to solve the equation: 43x5

43 First of all, we set up
43 Next, we multiply 5x3 to
x5 the equation like this. x5 make 15. We write the
15 below the line.
15

43 Then, we multiply 5x40 to

43
x5 make 200. Remember that it x5
is a 40, not a 4, because it is
Lastly we add the 15 and the 15 in the tens place. We write 15
200 to make 215. This is our
final product!
200 the 200 below the 15. 200
215

Now it’s your turn!

56 72
x4 x6
Multiply 4x6. Multiply 6x2.
+ Multiply 4x50.
+ Multiply 6x70.

Add 24+200. Add 12+420.

29 38
x2 x3
Multiply 2x9. Multiply 3x8.
+ Multiply 2x20.
+ Multiply 3x30.

Add 18+40. Add 24+90.

Practicing partial products
Let’s practice the partial products strategy! Remember that we multiply the numbers in
manageable parts – ones first, and then the tens.

33 82 46 90
x3 x5 x4 x6
+ + + +

48 75 65 84
x3 x3 x4 x3

Now that you know how to multiply 2-by-1-digit, 3-by-1-digit is easy! Just add another
row! This time you’ll be multiplying by hundreds as well.
EXAMPLE:
243 452 896 224
x2 x3 x2 x4
6
80
+ 400 + + +
486
Explain (in words) how you would solve this equation using the partial products strategy: 23x4.

LEARNING lattice multiplication
Lattice multiplication is a fun way to multiply! Let’s take this step by step.

Solve this equation: 54x24 Step 1: Write the numbers along the top and right side of the lattice.
Step 2: Multiply 4x2. Write the product in the top right quadrant. TENS
Step 3: Multiply 4x4. Write the product in the bottom right
ONES
quadrant.
5 4 Step 4: Multiply 5x2. Write the product in the top left quadrant.
Step 5: Multiply 5x4. Write the product in the bottom left quadrant.
2 Step 6: Add the diagonal rows and write the sums along the left side and
bottom.
4 Step 7: Write the final product by listing the numbers that you wrote along
the left side and bottom.

The product is _______________.

Solve this equation: 15x32 Step 1: Write the numbers along the top and right side of the lattice.
Step 2: Multiply 5x3. Write the product in the top right quadrant. TENS
Step 3: Multiply 5x2. Write the product in the bottom right
ONES
quadrant.
1 5 Step 4: Multiply 1x3. Write the product in the top left quadrant.
Step 5: Multiply 1x2. Write the product in the bottom left quadrant.
3 Step 6: Add the diagonal rows and write the sums along the left side and
bottom.
2 Step 7: Write the final product by listing the numbers that you wrote along
the left side and bottom.

The product is _______________.

Now try without the steps written down. Can you remember how to do it?

Practicing halving and doubling
Let’s practice the halving and doubling strategy! Decide which factor to divide in half, and
which one to double!

20x25 5x64

x = x =

So, 20x25= So, 5x64=

Which number did you choose to divide in half? Which number did you choose to double? Why?
Why? ____________________________ _________________________________

x = x =

So, 500x14= So, 66x5=

50x82 16x500

x = x =

So, 50x82= So, 16x500=
