Lessons: Abraham : Liturgical Calendar

Liturgical Calendar
- The clothes of the priest, the scriptures that they read, the ceremonies we perform are based to what we
call the Liturgical Calendar.
- This calendar is different from our calendar at home and offices or called as Gregorian calendar. The
Liturgical calendar is known as the official calendar of the church, in which this is divided into 5
major seasons.

5 major seasons of the Liturgical Calendar

 Advent (Adventus; Latin word & Parousia; Greek word, both means arrival or coming.)

- Time of preparation for the first coming of Christ or nativity of Christ


- Color purple is used to signify royalty of Jesus and repentance.
- we assemble an Advent tree to mark as the passage of the season prior to 4 Sunday before Christmas.

Advent wreath (evergreen wreath)


- continuous life and eternity of God

Candles

1. Hope (First Sunday)


- purple candle that is known as the Prophecy candle for prophet Isaiah and other prophets
predicted that Jesus is coming.

2. Love (Second Sunday)


- Purple candle that is known as the Bethlehem’s candle that represents faith as a reminder
of the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem before she gave birth to Jesus.

3. Joy (Third Sunday)


- Pink Candle, it is pink because the color rose is the liturgical color for joy that is known
as Shepherd’s Candle that reminds us about the shepherds who were in the field watching
their flocks when, suddenly, everything changed.
- This Sunday is known as Gaudete Sunday which means rejoice in Latin.

4. Peace (Fourth Sunday)


- Purple candle that is known as the Angels candle that signifies peace and to mark the
final week of prayer and penance as we wait for the birth of our Savior.

5. White Candle (Christmas day)


- White candle that should be light on Christmas day to represent purity-sinless and the
candle of Christ.

 Christmas

- Celebration of the birth of Jesus, this season includes the solemnity of Mary, the Epiphany, and the fiest
of the holy family.
- White and Gold is used to signify this joyous season.
- Epiphany – revelation of God making himself known to us.
- Magi – the three wise men (Melchior, Gasper, Balthasar) brought gifts to jesus
- The 3 Gifts – Gold to symbolize king.
- Frankincense to symbolize God
-Myrrh to symbolize human

 Ordinary time (1)

- Preparation for the next celebration, the baptism of Christ in the Jordan river is the mark of the start
of this season.
- Green is the color used to signify the season of growth.

 Lent

- Preparation for the commemoration of Jesus’s passion, death, and resurrection. Ash Wednesday is
the beginning of Lent.
- Purple is the color used to signify penitence.
- This season leads us to the Paschal Triduum (3-day commemoration of Jesus’s Passion).

 Easter

- Celebration of the triumph of Jesus over death in his resurrection.


- Like Christmas, White and Gold is used.
- Pentecost Sunday is the mark of end of the season, in this celebration, red is used to signify the flame
of the Holy Spirit.

(Pascal Candle is lightened up during Christmas and Easter, it symbolizes that Christ is the light of the
world.)

 Ordinary time (2)

- This is the season which ends the Calendar.


- Solemnity of Christ the King is celebrated in this season and the mark of end of the Calendar.

Exodus
- The meaning of Exodus means end or departure.
- The main point of this book is to save the Israelites from Egypt

The Call of Samuel


- The last Judge who was chosen by God to choose the Kings of Israel

The Call of Abraham

 Family of Abraham
- Terah is the Father of Abraham
- Nahor and Haran are the siblings of Abraham.
- Sarah is the wife of Abraham.
- Milcah is the sister-in-law of Abraham (wife of Nahor)

 How did God showed himself to Abraham?


- In the Land of Ur/Haran, God called Abraham to leave the land that he has always known and go to
the new land that God will show him. And God will make him the Father of all nations.

 Covenant of God to Abraham


- Circumcision
- Promises
- He will be the Father of all nations.

 Promises of God to Abraham


- Land – Canaan
- Blessings
- Descendants
- Promise Son (Isaac)

 How did God test Abraham’s Faith?


- God tested his faith by asking him to offer his promise son Isaac to God in Mt. Moriah
- Abraham said the word “God will provide” twice.

The Plan of God to the Israelites


- To rescue the Israelites (Chosen People) from the power of the Pharoah.
(this mission was given to Moses)

Sequence on saving the Israelites from the Pharoah

1. The Call of Moses

 How did God call Moses?


- Through a Burning bush, and he gave the mission to Moses.

- It wasn’t easy for Moses to say yes because he was slow speech (bulol),
God gave signs: staff turned into a snake and was restored.
: Moses’ hand became leprous.
: water from Nile River became blood.

- When Moses advice God to send someone else because he was slow speech but God then said his
brother Aaron will be his spoke person.

 What name did God revealed himself to Moses?


- “I am who I am” which means YHWH

2. 10 Plagues
1 – Nile River turned to blood
2 – Frogs spread over to the land of Egypt
3 – Gnats came on humans and animals
4 – Flies swarmed the houses of the Egyptians
5 – Pestilence struck the livestock of the Egyptians
6 – Boils festered humans and animals
7 – Thunder and hail rained down throughout the Egypt except Goshen
8 – Locusts covered the surface of the land and filled the houses of the egyptians
9 – Darkness prevailed in the land of Egypt for three days
10 – The firstborn of the Pharoah died

the 10th plague forced the Pharoah to release the Israelites

3. Passover

- Every household should get a year-old male lamb, and should take its blood to apply it to their two
doorpost and lintel on their house. Then they will consume its meat but It should be cooked
roasted, and not boiled. They will eat bread unleavened and will eat herbs that are bitter.

As of today, our Passover is the Eucharist.
