Book Review
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is about Greek mythology but with a modern
flare. I didn’t know a thing about Greek mythology when I picked up the book. But
once you get started, there’s no going back. It is the first book of the series Percy
Jackson and the Olympians which is a collection of action and humour- packed
adventures of Percy after discovering he’s a demigod- a child of a god and a mortal
human.
Percy is sarcastic, impulsive, a bit clueless and manages to get himself in the
wildest situations, which makes him a relatable character. You can’t help but love
the guy. When he finds out that he’s a halfblood (a demigod), his whole world turns
upside down immediately and he now has to go and save the world from a God’s
wrath (Hurray!). The funniest things about the book, in my opinion, are the hilarious
titles of the chapters. You can’t help laughing out loud at his cheeky comments. The
great thing about Percy is that he is not some ideal prodigy of a hero you can’t
relate to. Though very witty, he also makes mistakes, has his flaws, and doesn’t
always know what he is doing (he didn’t even know he was a halfblood till now, so
obviously!) but he learns how to survive and face the world throughout the book.
His friends Annabeth and Grover help him on his quest. Annabeth is wise and
resourceful while Grover is loyal and determined.
The way Rick Riordan merges the ancient Greek world and today’s modern world is
just remarkable! Honestly, who doesn’t like reading about mythology and ancient
myths? The author mixes it all makes it feel fresh and exciting. The author explores
a plethora of themes like identity, family and belonging, courage, loyalty, friendship
and most importantly, the power of choice. The book is not only about action, it also
involves the emotional growth and a different perception of the world ruled by gods.
The adventure is non-stop. The journeys are unpredictable. The outcomes? Even
more so. Also there are the craziest of plot-twists. The action is there, but there is
also a lot of heart. Percy’s adventure is not just about fighting monsters- it’s also
about finding himself and learning that even though he is part-god, he doesn’t have
to do it all alone. By the time I finished the book, I was hooked. I had to know what
happens next. So if you’re into adventure, humour with an edge of myths and
mythology, you’re definitely going to love the book!
