C) Settings Calculations
1. Calculate impedances in relay ohms on generator base with the CT and VT at the generator terminals:
Transformer:
Zt = Z x (MVA G /MVA T )(kVsec/kV G ) 2 (kV G 2 /MVA G ) = 0.1539 W primary
D
Zt secondary = Zt primary * (CTR/PTR) = 1.85 W @ 88.9 °
kVG 2
Generator: Xg X ' dv Zbase X ' dv = 0.3212 W primary
MVA G
X'dv secondary = Zg primary * (CTR/PTR) = j 3.85 W sec

System: Zs
kVs
Ifault
= 0.0782 W primary
3
kVpri
Zs secondary = Zs primary * (CTR/PTR) = 0.939 W @ 85.2 °
2. Backup distance relay (21) setting philosophy: Relay reach and time delay should be set to allow maximum generator loading
and coordinate with system line protection. The protection will be set for 120% of Zt Transformer, with a 90 degree MTA. This
will be a second zone function.
This element is blocked for VTFF and when the generator is offline.

for the generator and should be set as sensitive as possible, yet not trip for CT errors
that can occur during an external fault.
ft
Slope 1 and pickup of 10% and 0.1 per unit respectively are recommended for this
application. Break 1 should be set marginally above the machine rating.

Slope 2 should be set at 80%. Break 2 should be set lower than the saturation
curve kneepoint and coordinate with the maximum generator fault current contribution.

C) Settings Calculations
Relay Setting Philosophy: The generator is capable of continuous operation at 1.05 per
unit V/Hz. Corrective action should be taken for operation of the machine above 105%
V/Hz, which is not sanctioned by GE.
The 24T setting follows the recommendations of GE’s generator technical reference
GEK75512, trip for >118% V/Hz at 2 sec., and trip for <118% V/Hz according to
ft
overexcitation capability of the GSU transformer while coordinating with the Exciter's
Limiter. Typical Transformer V/Hz curve based on a composite of curves in C37.91.
Reset time should be 600 seconds per GE recommendation.

27TN Relay Ranges: 0.0000 - 3.0000 per unit Volts pickup range

C) Settings Calculations
Relay Setting Philosophy: The 27TN function is set during commissioning to cover the last
several percent of the stator closest to the neutral. The 27TN pickup setting must be based
upon the minimum measured 3RD harmonic voltage appearing across the resistor (NGR)
in the neutral grounding transformer.
This function will be blocked during startup and for VTFF.
The following procedure may be used to set the the 27TN function:
ft
2 Obtain the minimum 3rd harmonic voltage across the NGR by methods described above
during generator load testing.
3 Program the 3RD HARM NTRL UV PICKUP setting to be one half of the minimum
observed 3rd harmonic voltage across the NGR in per unit on NGT Secondary voltage base.
ra
This setting may be entered in steps of 0.0001 puV.
4 Program the 3RD HARM NTRL UV DELAY setting to 5 seconds.
5 Program the 3RD HARM NTRL UV MAX POWER pickup setting for a margin above the
per-unit power level in which the 3RD HARM NTRL UV PICKUP setting is determined.
6 Program the 3RD HARM NTRL UV MIN POWER pickup setting for a margin below the
D
per-unit power level in which the measured 3RD harmonic voltage falls below the pickup
setting. Set for 0 if minimum does not fall below the setting.
