SHWIRIAN'S MODEL (1986)

WHO IS PATRICIA SCWERIN?

Patricia Schwirian is a key figure in nursing informatics, primarily known for her "Schwirian Nursing
Informatics Model'', which she proposed in 1986. Her contributions have helped conceptualize how
information technology can support nursing practice, research, education, and administration.

Schwirian Nursing Informatics Model

 The Schwirian model is a "framework designed to help nurses identify and apply technology to
meet specific healthcare goals". It emphasizes the interaction between nursing, technology, and
information systems.

Key Components of the Model

1. Raw Materials

- Refers to the data and information used in nursing.

- This includes patient data, clinical observations, medical histories, and other relevant healthcare
data.

2. Technology

- Refers to the tools and systems used to process, store, and manage information.

- Examples include computers, software applications, databases, and other informatics tools.

3. Users

- Refers to the people involved in using nursing informatics.

- This includes nurses, physicians, administrators, researchers, and educators.

4. Goal

- The ultimate purpose is to improve patient care outcomes.

- The model focuses on ensuring that technology and data are used effectively to enhance decision-
making, efficiency, and quality of care.

IMPORTANCE OF PYRAMID

The pyramid's arrangement emphasizes the importance of a strong foundation. Just as a building can't
stand without a strong foundation, nursing informatics cannot be effective without a comprehensive
and reliable information base. The technology layer provides the structure to manage and access this
information, while the users are the ones who interact with it to achieve the desired goal.

Essentially, the pyramid illustrates that each element is essential and builds upon the one below it. A
strong foundation of raw materials, supported by robust technology, and utilized by skilled users, will
lead to the achievement of the ultimate goal of improved patient care.

Theoretical Basis

The Schwirian model aligns with general systems theory, viewing nursing informatics as a dynamic
system where raw materials (data) are processed through technology and used by individuals to achieve
a specific goal (improved patient outcomes).

Legacy and Impact

- Schwirian’s work emphasized integrating informatics into nursing practice, which has become
increasingly critical with the growth of electronic health records (EHRs) and decision-support systems.

- Her model remains a foundation in nursing informatics education, guiding the development and
implementation of informatics systems.
