Continuous
Thermal
Monitoring
A modern approach to electrical fire prevention.

Pain points of IR, benefits of CTM
Allianz Insurance’s global claims report shows that fires are the top cause for
corporate insurance claims after natural disasters. Electrical origins are a common
source of fires. Of all the fire risks in electrical systems, loose or faulty connections
represent approximately one-fourth of the total.
Traditional methods for mitigating the risk caused by faulty connections
includes periodic thermographic inspections of electrical equipment.
This is typically done by electrical contractors or inspectors using
infrared cameras and manual reporting. This method is manually
intensive and potentially prone to error, not to mention that it only
represents a snapshot in time.
Digital technology is now providing new ways to monitor and alert facility
management and maintenance people on a continuous basis and
between inspections, for times when abnormal temperatures rise and
pose a potential risk of fire.
This helps to provide peace of mind and can be advantageous for limiting
the impact on insurance premiums, especially as electrical infrastructure ages over time.

Capabilities of CTM with site-wide
monitoring and predictive
analytics and support
Schneider Electric™’s Continuous Thermal Monitoring seamlessly integrates
innovative wireless temperature sensor data with EcoStruxure™ Power Monitoring
Expert to provide facility operations and maintenance teams insights into MV/LV
equipment’s thermal and condition data.
With Power Monitoring Expert, you receive:
Live data display
• Monitor the temperature of busbar, cable,
transformer, and circuit breaker connections.
• Drill down into equipment diagrams to
view temperature data and status for every
temperature sensor inside the equipment.
Alarms, events, and notifications
• Pre-alarms and alerts can be collected and
visualized by the system, with configurable
SMS or email notifications sent by the
software.
Trends
• Detailed temperature data can be visualized
over time for selected sources to track the
evolution of temperature conditions.
• Select the date range and analyze detailed
historical data; data can also be visualized
in real-time.

Medium voltage
Schneider Electric has tested
and validated the continuous
thermal monitoring solution
in Masterclad™, PremSet™,
MotorPact™, HVL, HVLcc,
CBGS-0, and GHA switchgear.
The sensor placement in medium voltage
switchgear is common throughout the
equipment ranges and includes busbar
connections, busbar and cable connection
points, and fuse connections.
Sensors communicate wirelessly to a data
concentrator that can support up to 60 sensors.
Each data concentrator is connected to a
substation monitoring device, which performs
temperature threshold calculations and
integrates with the switchgear HMI for local
monitoring.
