Part I. Inspection
NOTE: Prior to inspection, wipe surfaces clean using a soft cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol, mineral spirits,
naphtha, or other suitable cleaning agent.
1. Remove the tail cone access panels. Refer to 53-22-00 of the appropriate airplane maintenance manual
(AMM) for removal instructions.
2. Visually inspect the inner and outer surface of the bend radius common to the inboard flange and the frame
web, as shown in Figure 1, using a 10x magnifier, a mirror, a suitable light source, or other equipment capable
of providing equal or better resolution. See AC 43.13-1b section 5-15 thru 5-18 for additional acceptable
inspection procedures.
3. Regardless of the findings, the inspection results must be reported to Piper electronically by completing the
Feedback Form at https://techpubs.piper.com/feedback.
4. If no cracks are found in the frame, correct any systems that were disturbed during the inspection and install
the tail cone access panels and proceed to Part III. If cracks are found in the frame, proceed to Part II for repair.

Part II. Repair Per AC-43-13-1B

Repair in accordance with AC-43.13-1B, as follows, after all internal equipment, rigging, and stowage box has been
removed:
NOTE: This repair follows AC 43-13-1B guidance and is not contrary to any manufactures data. As such, no
further engineering substantiation or FAA/ODA approval is required.
1. Vertically support tail cone using a jack stand.
2. Strip paint per AC 43.13-1B at all frame to skin attachment locations, shown in Figure 2, using a manufacturer
recommended stripping process and appropriate PPE. Mechanical abrasives for top-coat only removal is
acceptable. Mechanical abrasive for primer removal is not acceptable. Primer removal down to bare metal may
not be required, and is not preferred.
3. Carefully locate and drill out all frame attaching rivets from the rivet head side using a step-up size drill bit
procedure.
NOTE: 1/64th oversize diameter repair size rivets of the same type may be used at any location for elongated
holes provided 2 times diameter edge distance is maintained. Holes to be clean and round.
4. Remove suspect frame by carefully cutting frame inner flange and web only in multiple locations as required
and flex frame to collapse. Care not to damage inner skin surface.
5. Install replacement frame as shown in Figure 2, provided from a new procured replacement frame (for
PA-46-600TP, Piper P/N 46F53A213-001; for all other models, Piper P/N 84201-004) in two pieces (lower and
upper half). This installation is done through the access panel on the bottom of the tail cone.
6. Prepare frame upper and lower half nesting splice members from another procured frame. Splice frame Length
L to be two times or more than length W2 per AC 43.13-1B Figure 4-20. Use L= 6 inches.
7. Number of rivets used for splice on each side of the cut is calculated using per AC 43.13-1B Table 4-10,
Figure 4-20, and part dimensions W1, W2, & W3. Use 0.70 times the value of required on each side for a single
shear lap splice.
8. Calculation for number of rivets per side of frame cut for splice member.
For W1 = W3 = 0.70 inches; W2 = 2.35 inches Frame is 0.032 inches thick.
a. Number of 1/8th AD flange rivets per side = 0.70 x 4.9 = 3.43, 3.43 x 0.70 = 2.4 or use 3 rivets per side
of cut in the flange.
NOTE: MS20426AD-4 rivets are required for external skin locations. Do not re-countersink, shave rivet
heads flush only as required.
b. Number of 1/8th AD web rivets per side = 2.35 x 4.9 = 11.52, 11.52 x 0.70 = 8.06 or use 9 rivets per side
of cut in the web.
NOTE: Install splice rivets wet using one of the following: Corlar® 13550STM Corrosion Resistant
Epoxy Primer, Alumigrip 4101 Non-Chrome Corrosion-Inhibiting Epoxy Primer, or Aerodur HS
2118 ChromeFree Epoxy Primer.
9. Maintain 2D + 0.06 edge distance and equally space rivets between edges.
10. Drill centered clearance holes in the aft stowage box to slightly larger than the rivet head diameter of the
spliced frame assembly, as shown in Figure 3, to allow for reinstallation of the aft stowage box.
11. Install tail cone, aft stowage box, and other aft fuselage structures that were previously removed, picking up
existing attachment locations with replacement rivets.
12. Correct any systems that were disturbed during the inspection and install the tail cone access panels.
13. Reapply the primer and top-coat paint where previously removed. Contact a repair shop and specify the Axalta
Imron paint used in the original finish. This will help assure the best possible color match, same durability, and
appearance. Refer to 12-00-00 of the appropriate airplane maintenance manual for more information.

Part III. Documentation of Compliance
