Flasks
• Conical flasks: are useful for titration.

• Round Bottomed flasks: are useful for boiling liquids,

they can withstand higher temperature. They may be
heated on a direct flame.

• Volumetric flasks: are graduated to contain a certain

volume.

- These are made of less hardened
glass or plastic material that can
withstand the centrifugal velocity.

- Their bottom may be rounded or

conical.

- Some may be graduated.

Test Tube Holder
Metal, used to hold tubes

the fingers.

Test Tube Rack

- These are for tubes to stand in.
- Their holes vary in size
(according to the diameter of the
tubes) and number.
- They are made of wood, metal or
plastic.
Filter Paper
Used to filter fluid and water. Solutions

funnels
funnels are used for:
1. Pouring liquids into narrow-mouthed
containers.
2. Supporting filter papers during
filtration.

burettes and pipettes.

Pipettes
A distinction must be made between two types of pipettes:

Transfer pipettes Graduated pipettes

have one mark and are used to deliver have graduated stems and are employed
a specific volume. to deliver various small volumes.
They consist of a glass tube with a
cylindrical bulge at the middle.

These pipettes have different volumes They are obtainable with a total capacity
1, 2, 5, 20 and 25 ml of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 ml.
The lower end of some pipettes is
included in its capacity, while it is
excluded in other pipettes.
How to use a pipette?
- The solution is withdrawn into the pipette until just above the graduation;
the upper end is then closed with the tip of the index finger.
- The outside of the pipette-stem is gently wiped from adherent fluid.
- With the graduation mark at the eye level, the pressure of the finger is gently
relaxed; so that the liquid slowly falls till the bottom of the meniscus reaches
the upper graduation. The pressure of the finger is increased to prevent
further escape of liquid.
- To deliver the solution from a pipette introduce it in the receiving vessel and
relax the finger allowing the liquid to run out with the tip of the pipette
touching the inside of the vessel at an angle of 60°, do not dip the pipette
into the delivered liquid.
- When all the liquid has run in, allow the pipette to drain in this position for
15 second (drainage time), then withdraw the pipette after use, rinse the
pipette with distilled water and allow draining.
Measuring cylinder
• Characters and shape.
It has a narrow cylindrical shape.
Each marked line on the graduated
cylinder represents the amount of
liquid that has been measured. Their
capacities vary from 5 ml to 2 litres.

• Uses: used to measure rough

volumes
