EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY of LEFKE

Faculty of Engineering
Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
EE 342 / ECE 314 – Communication Systems I
PROJECT ASSIGNMENT

Std. No: Name: Gr: Class: _ _ _ _ _

Due to: 23/05/2024, until 17:00 pm.

Select any topic from our Communication Systems I course topics (eg, AM Modulation
Techniques, Binary PAM and/or PSK or any topic defined in the Syllabus) to prepare
your report. Theoretically analyze any circuit model that can be used in that area. By
using any design program (such as circuit maker / pspice / orcad/ matlab / simulink,
etc.) get the same outputs and compare your results that is obtained from the theoretical
one. Provide us schematics as well. Some project ideas are as follows:
1. Design and implement an AM transmitter and receiver using an LC oscillator and
an envelope detector.
2. Design and build an FM transmitter and receiver using a voltage-controlled
oscillator and a frequency discriminator.
3. Build an analog phase-locked loop (PLL) and use it to demodulate a FM signal.
4. Implement a frequency-shift keying (FSK) modulator and demodulator using an
analog-to-digital converter and a digital-to-analog converter.
5. Create an amplitude-shift keying (ASK) modulator and demodulator using a
simple transistor amplifier and a detector circuit.
6. Design and implement a digital pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) transmitter
and receiver using a microcontroller and pulse shaping techniques.
7. Build a quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmitter and receiver using
an FPGA and I/Q modulator and demodulator.
8. Design and build a differential phase shift keying (DPSK) transmitter and
receiver using a phase-locked loop and digital signal processing.
9. Create a frequency-shift keying (FSK) transmitter and receiver using a digital
signal processor and a voltage-controlled oscillator.
10.Implement a binary phase shift keying (BPSK) transmitter and receiver using a
digital-to-analog converter and an analog-to-digital converter.

I expect a brief professionally written report with references. The report should give an
introduction to the problem, a description of the solution and any relevant theory,
simulation results, and conclusions. I expect that you will read the current literature for
your application and that it will be correctly and completely cited in a reference list.
Novelty, correctly applied, will be rewarded in the project grading. All Matlab/C++
code should be turned in via an electronic appendix (i.e., create a zip folter abd submit it
with your report).
You must write the report yourself; plagiarism can lead to a failing mark in the project,
the course, or worse.

When you read articles or reports, keep the following in mind

 What is the main contribution of the paper?
 Is this important, why?
 Is this a theoretical contribution to some fundamental problems in Communication Systems
Application?
 What was the main insight in getting the result?
 What is not clear to you?
 What did the authors not do, and you regard important?
 What are the most important assumptions are they limiting?
 What are the possible applications suggested in the paper?
 How does this relate to other things we have seen?
 What extensions does this suggest? Can you suggest some project idea based around the ideas
in this paper?
Grading Methodlogy:
1. 15% Abstract, Introduction, Conclusion
2. 15% The general structure of Report (Format, Labeling, Figure, Referencing)
3. 20% Research Methodology
4. 50% Theoretical and Technical Understanding & Discussion with Simulation Results

Projects must be made individually. Cheating is a behavior that requires disciplinary

investigation. Plagiarism will be checked and projects with more than 20% similarity
will be considered unsuccessful.

Note: You can use the Course Project Preparetion document which is given in the
moodle course page tpo write your Project. You must save your Word document such as
