Physics revision notes

6.1: Light reflection

Definition of Light = Type of radiation or energy our eyes can sense, it
travels in a straight line.
Two main types of reflection (when a light ray bounces off an object):
• Regular reflection = also known as specular reflection –
happens when light is reflected on a smooth surface. Reflected
rays are in an orderly pattern.
• Diffused reflection = happens when light is reflected on a
rough surface. Reflected rays are scattered everywhere.

Most of the mirrors you use are plane mirrors. Plane means flat
surface.
When drawing light rays, you must use a ruler and draw arrows to
show the direction of the light ray.
The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.

Scientific Definition of:

Normal = perpendicular / right angle
Plane = Flat surface

6.2: Light refraction

Refraction of light is defined as the change in direction of light on
passing from one transparent medium to another because of
change in speed.

Key word: FASTER AWAY…. SLOWER TOWARDS (the normal)

The material that light passes through is called a medium.
Air, water and glass are each examples of a medium for light to
pass through.
You will remember that light travels very fast. The speed of light in
air is 300 000 kilometers per second (3*108/s.
When light passes from air into water or glass, The light travels
more slowly.
Light moves more slowly when it changes from air to water or glass,
causing it to change directions.
6.3: Making rainbows
The range of colors that can be seen in white light is called a
spectrum.
In spectrums colors aren't seperated but they merge from one
another.
The order of the spectrum is: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue,
Indigo and violet.
You can memorize them by using the made-up name: ROY G. BIV.
Definition of dispersion: The splitting of light into different colors.
Dispersion happens because light is refracted.
Dispersion is made by a triangular prism.

6.4: Colors of light

There are 3 primary colors or light. They cannot be made by any
other colors. They are:
Red Green Blue
Use the word RGB to remember them.
A transparent object will let all light pass through it.
A translucent object lets some light pass through it.
An opaque object doesn't let light pass through it.

A non-luminous object is an object that doesn't create its own light.

Black absorbs all colors, reflects none (good absorber)
White reflects all colors, absorbs none (good reflector)
The color of the light might come from white light shining through a
colored filter—a tinted piece of glass or plastic.
A red filter will – for example only permit red light and absorb all the
other lights.
