ORIGINS OF A GENRE
T
he Lotus Seven occupies an unusual place in the kit
car firmament. Most cars that spawn replicas are, to
some extent, relatively unobtainable. Whether it’s a new
Ferrari or a classic Cobra, most cars that are replicated
are in some way financially out of reach. There aren’t that
many kit cars that are replicated, but one stands out: the Lotus Seven.
So what makes this self-build so special that it has inspired imitators?
There’s not another Lotus that more aptly illustrates Colin
Chapman’s ‘simplify and then add lightness’ philosophy. The barely-
there bodywork, the lack of luxury and the unfiltered focus on
performance make it one of the most single-minded Lotus road cars of
all time. If you need proof, dwell on this: indicators remained an option
for over a decade. Simple. Light.
Of course, there was a reason the Seven was paired back like a racing
car – because that’s what it was. It was designed to fit in with 750
Motor Club rules, and most early buyers raced their cars. The car’s road
legality simply meant that it could be driven to and from venues.
For many owners, though, the Seven became more than that. It’s a
car for touring as well as competition, and the Seven recipe remains –
somewhat astonishingly – popular and relevant today. The fact that over
60 years after the first Series 1 hit the road the Seven remains available
as a supercar-baiting Caterham tells you something about the rightness
of the model. Just like the 28bhp Sidevalve powered original, a modern
Seven remains one of the fastest ways of travelling from point A to B.
By the 1970s, Lotus outgrew the Seven. Chapman famously said
it’s the kind of thing he could “dash off in a weekend” as he took his
marque upmarket with cars like the Europa and Esprit. That’s as may
be, but decades on the Seven still delivers levels of performance and
entertainment that its peers cannot. It punches way above its weight,
just as it always has. From Series 1 to 4, here is the Lotus Seven.
Would have had drums all-round in the ’50s. Steering wheel at a reclined angle in the S1.
Only the top spec Sevens had a Coventry Climax engine... Seven S1 arrived in 1957, two years after the Six was discontinued.

Thomas Woolley has owned a number of Lotus
models over the years (Elans, Europa, Elite, Eleven)
and regrets selling them all, but it’s unlikely he’ll
ever part with the Seven. He co-owned this car with
QED founder Ken Snailham, and it became his when
Ken sadly passed away. He loves it for its handling, simplicity and
looks, even if he jokes that’s not ideal “for someone of my age who
suffers with a bad back.”
...you’d usually see a Ford Sidevalve in an S1. It’s the only car here on wire wheels.

Lotus Sevens, some as road cars others strictly set

one since 1993 and is succinct on the subject of
what he likes most about it: “Handling, braking,

enduringly popular.

particularly looking for, after giving his one-
previous-owner car a nine-year restoration he’s

kind in existence. We’d be inclined to agree. His advice to anyone
