GENERAL

• T h i s manual c o v e r s 6 o s c i l l o s c o p e models; CS-5270, CS-5260, CS-5230, CS-5275, CS-5265,

and CS-5235. However, e x p l a n a t i o n about t h e p a n e l s , o p e r a t i n g p r o c e d u r e s and a p p l i c a -

t i o n s i s made u s i n g t h e CS-5270. A l t h o u g h most of the c o n t e n t s i s common to 6 models,

p l e a s e note t h a t any p o r t i o n which i s not i s expressed w i t h i n b r a c k e t s [ ] .

2. SAFETY AND EQUIPMENT PROTECTION PRECAUTIONS

1) Check your l i n e v o l t a g e b e f o r e use. The o s c i l l o s c o p e has a f u s e h o l d e r and voltage

s e l e c t o r on the l e f t of the AC i n l e t on the r e a r p a n e l . The v o l t a g e below the W lark

shows t h e 1ine voltage setting of y o u r o s c i 1 l o s c o p e . I f your line voltage is

different f r o m the o s c i l l o s c o p e s e t t i n g , there i s a danger of m a l f u n c t i o n i n g . Do

not connect to the supply u n t i l the v o l t a g e s e l e c t o r matches the supply voltage.

Set to 100 V.

2) The osci1loscope i s equipped w i t h internal components that are highly charged

electrically. For your own p r o t e c t i o n , do not remove the c a s i n g f o r any reason.

3) Do not use the o s c i l l o s c o p e i n the f o l l o w i n g l o c a t i o n s .

• I n e x t r e m e l y hot and/or humid a r e a s


• I n a r e a s a f f e c t e d by high l e v e l s of mechanical v i b r a t i o n

4) Make sure t h a t the v o l t a g e a p p l i e d to each input t e r m i n a l does not exceed the maximum

specified.

a CH 1 and CH2 input t e r m i n a l s : 500 Vp-p or 250 V (DC + AC peak, 1kHz or less)

^CH3 and Z AXIS input t e r m i n a l s : 100 Vp-p or 50 V (DC + AC peak, 1kHz or less)

Do not under any circumstances apply v o l t a g e to the o u t p u t t e r m i n a l s from e x t e r n a l

power s o u r c e s .

5) I n o r d e r to p r e v e n t the CRT' s f l u o r e s c e n t s c r e e n from s c o r c h i n g , do not adjust the

brightness higher than n e c e s s a r y . Do not l e a v e the s p o t t i n g f u n c t i o n on for long

p e r i o d s of time.
6) The Instrument I s equipped w i t h a u x i l i a r y support. You can use i t either horizontally
or v e r t i c a l l y . Do not p l a c e any o b j e c t on the top of the instrument or p o s i t i o n i t i n
a r e a s where t h e v e n t i l a t i o n h o l e s i n the c a s i n g a r e b l o c k e d . Any blockage wi11
cause the t e m p e r a t u r e of the i n t e r n a l components to i n c r e a s e , r e s u l t i n g in possible
damage.

7) Connect a ground w i r e to the GND terminal for safety.

8) I f the power i s t u r n e d on and o f f r e p e a t e d l y , the o s c i l l s c o p e may malfunction. Once

the power i s turned o f f , l e a v e f i v e seconds before t u r n i n g the power on again.

9) The probes s u p p l i e d w i t h the o s c i l l o s c o p e a r e p r e c i s i o n p a r t s . Handle them w i t h g r e a t


care. [The probes s u p p l i e d w i t h the CS-5230, CS-5260, or CS-5270 have t e r m i n a l s f o r
detect ing readout signals. Do not use them w i t h an o s c i 1 l o s c o p e w i t h no probe
detection function. ]

3. FEATURES

High S e n s i t i v i t y : S e n s i t i v i t y up to 1 mV/div.

f i d e Bands : The f r e q u e n c y range i s DC t o 20 MHz ( - 3 dB) a t

1 fflV a n d , 2 mV/div r a n g e and DC t o 100 MHz [DC t o

40 MHz f o r t h e CS-5230 or CS-5235, DC t o 60 MHz f o r

the CS-5260 or CS-5265] ( - 3 dB) f o r 5 mV/div.

HDTV : A s p e c i a l l y d e s i g n e d HDTV s i g n a l t r i g g e r i n g circuit

o f f e r s s t a b l e and a d j u s t m e n t - f r e e synchronization with

the FRAME a n d L I N E signals from smal1 to l a r g e

amplitudes.

Ease of o p e r a t i o n : The o s c i 1 l o s c o p e does not u s e m u l t i - f u n c t i o n knobs.

Thus, an i n e x p e r i e n c e d person may use i t e a s i l y .

Three-channel v e r t i c a l a x i s : T r i g g e r s i g n a l s may be measured on CH3 w i t h o u t using

the t r i g g e r view f u n c t i o n .

Stepless s e n s i t i v i t y control : The v e r t i c a l a x i s s e n s i t i v i t y may be changed from 1

mV/div to 5 V/div c o n t i n u o u s l y w i t h a r o t a r y s w i t c h .

High Speed Sweep : H i g h speed sweeping i s p o s s i b l e a t a time base o f 5

n s / d i v ( d u r i n g x 1 0 MAG operation)

[10 n s / d i v f o r the CS-5230 or CS-5235],

High Accuracy :Accuracy i s within 3% f o r b o t h vertical axi s

s e n s i t i v i t y and sweep time.

Fixed Synchronization : The f i x e d s y n c h r o n i z a t i o n f u n c t i o n e l i m i n a t e s t r o u b l e -

some s y n c h r o n i z a t i o n .

One Touch X-Y : S w i t c h i n g to X-Y o p e r a t i o n i s v i a a single switch.

Automatic T r i g g e r S i g n a l S e l e c t i o n : T r i g g e r s i g n a l can be s e l e c t e d a u t o m a t i c a l l y according

to t h e VERT MODE c o n t r o l s e t t i n g by s w i t c h i n g t h e

SOURCE c o n t r o l to VERT.

CHI OUTPUT : A channel 1 output t e r m i n a l * i s added f o r CHI i n p u t

signal monitoring.

High S t a b i l i t y , High R e l i a b i l i t y : Hybrid integrated circuits a r e employed in al1

circuits, r e a l i z i n g high standards i n s t a b i 1 i t y and

reliability.

Scale I l l u m i n a t i o n : The s c a l e i l l u m i n a t i o n f u n c t i o n makes i t p o s s i b l e t o

take photographs of waveform d a t a d i s p l a y e d on the CRT

i n a dark room.

Delay Time P o s i t i o n : A d e l a y t i m e p o s i t i o n may be s e t q u i c k l y and accu-

r a t e l y w i t h coarse and f i n e controls.

Readout : The v e r t i c a l axis input sensitivity, sweep t i m e and

other s c a l e f a c t o r s a r e d i s p l a y e d i n c h a r a c t e r s on the

CRT.

Cursor F u n c t i o n : The v o l t a g e d i f f e r e n c e , c u r r e n t ratio, time d i f f e r e n c e ,

time r a t i o , f r e q u e n c y and p h a s e d i f f e r e n c e may be

measured w i t h two c u r s o r s . They a r e d i s p l a y e d on the

CRT f o r quick and a c c u r a t e measurement.

A l t e r n a t e ( A L T ) and Chop (CHOP) Modes

When u s i n g t h e s e modes d u r i n g m u l t i - t r a c e o p e r a t i o n , t h e d i s p l a y I s d i v i d e d up
a c c o r d i n g to time.

I n the chop mode, each channel i s s u b d i v i d e d a c c o r d i n g to time w i t h i n each sweep.

N o r m a l l y , t h i s k i n d of measurement i s c a r r i e d out w i t h s i g n a l s of e i t h e r s l o w e r

sweep r a t e from 1 ms/div or low r e p e t i t i o n r a t e s where f l i c k e r i s q u i t e n o t i c e a b l e ,

I n t h e a l t e r n a t e mode, each c h a n n e l i s d i s p l a y e d one a f t e r a n o t h e r . Therefore,

each channel d i s p l a y appears much c l e a r e r . Normally, a f a s t e r sweep i s employed.

In order to operate the o s c i l l o s c o p e a t i t s optimum p e r f o r m a n c e level, c a r r y out t h e

7 — 1 Single Trace Operation

1) Alternating current d i spI ay

ADJUSTMENT PRIOR TO MEASUREMENT), t h e s i g n a l a p p l i e d t o t h e CHI INPUT t e r m i n a l i s

continuously. However, i f t h i s i s not n e c e s s a r y , l e a v e the s e t t i n g a t CA1.

1) Switching v e r t i c a l operation modes

When two o r more s w i t c h e s . o t h e r t h a i t h e ALT/CHOP a r e a c t i v a t e d w i t h t h e V. MODE,

the CRT s c r e e n d i s p l a y s t h e s i g n a l s a p p l i e d t o the INPUT t e r m i n a l s o f t h e a c t i v a t e d

channels. Changing the sweep time.and s e t t i n g the t r i g g e r p o i n t may be completed I n

the same way a s C l l s i n g l e t r a c e o p e r a t i o n . When the V. MODE c o n t r o l i s s e t t o ALT,

s i g n a l s of t h e s e l e c t e d channels a r e d i s p l a y e d one a f t e r another f o r each sweep. When

it i s s e t t o CHOP, t h e s i g n a l s a r e s u b - d i v i d e d according t o time and d i s p l a y e d on

POSITION c o n t r o l t o move t h e waveform p o r t i o n to be m a g n i f i e d t o t h e m i d d l e o f t h e

CRT s c r e e n . Then, p r e s s t h e x 1 0 MAG s w i t c h t o m a g n i f y t h e w a v e f o r m 10 t i m e s i n the

horizontal direction.

7 — 4 DeIayed Sweep O p e r a t i o n

Delayed sweep ( B sweep) i s another way t o observe a waveform p o r t i o n by m a g n i f y i n g i t i n

terms of time. I t a l l o w s t h e m a g n i f i c a t i o n to be s e t f r e e l y and t h e m a g n i f i e d and non-

m a g n i f i e d p o r t i o n s t o be d i s p l a y e d a l t e r n a t e l y by u s i n g the ALT sweep f u n c t i o n .

1) S e t t h e H. MODE c o n t r o l to A. Adjust t h e c o n t r o l s so t h a t t h e p o r t i o n of t h e input

waveform to be observed i s d i s p l a y e d on the CRT.

2) S e t t h e AFTER D/B TRIG' D c o n t r o l t o AFTER. D. S e t t h e H. MODE c o n t r o l to ALT. The


waveform p o r t ion t o be m a g n i f i e d i s intensity-modulated and d i s p l a y e d b r i g h t . I n

8. APPLICATIONS

Since b o t h the v e r t i c a l and h o r i z o n t a l a x e s of the o s c i l l o s c o p e have been c a l i b r a t e d ,

the o s c i l l o s c o p e i s capable of not only d i s p l a y i n g waveforms but a l s o measuring v o l t a g e or

time q u a n t i t a t i v e l y . For t h e s e measurements, be s u r e to r o t a t e the V. VARI and H. VARI

controls f u l l y clockwise to the CAL p o s i t i o n ( u n t i l a c l i c k sound i s h e a r d ) . We recommend

that t h e probe ( i n c l u d e d i n t h e a c c e s s o r i e s ) be u s e d t o m i n i m i z e i n t e r f e r e n c e to the

s i g n a l s you want to measure.

8 — 1 measuring W o l t a g e B e t w e e n Two Po i n t s on a Waveform

Use t h e f o l l o w i n g procedures f o r measuring voltage between two p o i n t s , peak t o peak

voltage, e t c .

1) A p p l y a s i g n a l to the INPUT t e r m i n a l , and a d j u s t the VOLTS/DIV and SWEEP TIME/DIV


controls. Reset the t r i g g e r point i f necessary.

Set the AC-GND-DC c o n t r o l to AC.

2) Use the y POSITION c o n t r o l so t h a t one of the p o i n t s to be measured f a l l s on one of


the h o r i z o n t a l g r a d u a t i o n l i n e s , w h i l e the other p o i n t can s t i l l be observed on the CRT
screen.

3) Use the POSITION c o n t r o l so t h a t the p o i n t to be measured f a l l s on the v e r t i c a l

may o c c u r i n t h e v o l t a g e measurement. This inaccuracy i s c a u s e d by low range c u t - o f f

frequencies. At AC, t h e most a c c u r a t e frequency measurements a r e r e a l i z e d above t h e 20 to

30 Hz range. T h e r e f o r e , when measuring f r e q u e n c i e s below t h i s range, s w i t c h the AC-GND-DC

c o n t r o l t o t h e DC s e t t i n g . I f you a r e u s i n g t h e probe s u p p l i e d w i t h t h e o s c i 1 l o s c o p e ,

a c c u r a t e measurement of f r e q u e n c i e s as low a s 2 to 3 Hz can be r e a l i z e d a t AC.

Always use a probe when measuring p u l s e s or s i g n a l s of a few hundred kHz or above.

This i s because d i s t o r t i o n w i l l o c c u r i n the waveform's h i g h f r e q u e n c y component due to

the use of long l e a d s . T h i s makes i t d i f f i c u l t to conduct a c c u r a t e waveforms. This i s

also t r u e f o r probes w i t h l o n g ground l e a d s , so keep them a s s h o r t as p o s s i b l e . In

a d d i t i o n , e n s u r e the ground l e a d c l i p i s c o n n e c t e d to a ground p o t e n t i a l c l o s e to the
