Grant Proposal TO TAKE UP RESEARCH!
The short answer would be, I have always been interested in pursuing physics ever since
I joined the institute, and my passion has only grown since then. But if i have to explain
better, The long answer is more complex, comprising a mix of positive experiences with
research under a series of professors, taking physics courses at the institute, reading
famous works in condensed matter physics, watching physics videos as a kid (and as an
adult), satisfying my scientific curiosity, and, lastly, because it looks good on my resume
for PhD applications.
-Devansh Satra
It's a balance between what I was supposed to do and what I needed to do. Being in my
third year, where everyone was getting an internship, I needed to have one. Also,
having the plan of pursuing higher studies, I anyways needed a research experience.
The amalgam of these thoughts led me on my path to search a core internship.
-Kunal Kumar

Grant Proposal TO TAKE UP RESEARCH!
I was interested in research and have the aim of pursuing higher studies, hence
getting a research internship was ideal for me.
-Ganesh Iyer
I have always wanted to work in theoretical physics and the MEMS Department Budged
me to the Solid State physics area. I also didnt want to follow the crowd running towards
AI or Data Science.
-Alok Otta
I have been interested in core mechanical domains since the beginning, but had not
been able to indulge in many research projects. So a 3-month long research internship
was the best way for me to pursue my interest in core as well as get good research
exposure. This decision was also guided by my interest in pursuing higher studies after
graduation.
-Saukhya Telge
Loved the research idea and the general interests of the lab. I had experience
working in a similar domain. Therefore, the project seemed very interesting. I didn't
have a specific motivation to chose a core internship, but really loved the project
ideas.

Grant Proposal TO TAKE UP RESEARCH!
I had interest in Electrical Core since the start itself. Along with that I was also looking
on working in Quantum Engineering. Thus Quantum Photonics became a natural choice
for me to apply for.
-Neel Rambhia
My internship wasn't mech core per se, but it was research related to Terahertz waves
and Perovskite solar cells. After first year, I didn't have a PoR and so I had a lot of free
time except acads so I tried to do project under a professor and that really ignited the
spark inside me(lame IC engine joke). Witnessing some of my seniors to go outside
India for 2 months just for research internship sounded so cool to me, that I made it my
mission to secure an international internship by myself after 2nd year. Doing the
research work then got me thinking that it's way better than the conventional non-core
roles because it engaged my brain more. The bottom line is I don't want my brain to
stop thinking, and this was the work where I think my mind won't be just chasing
money but also innovations, breakthroughs and the positive impact on the society.

GENERAL ADVICES
Do not laze away from completing and submitting applications because you are
sceptical about your chances of getting selected .
-Adityaya Dhande
1. Start Early. Databases, Resume, SOP Drafts, LORs etc should be ready as early as
possible (preferably by September/October).
2. Start Mailing by October/November and do not be discouraged to cold mail and
not get many replies. Not getting replies does not mean that you are not deserving
of the position (there can be a lot of different reasons for no replies).
3. Take Research Internship Programs very seriously since they are usually your
best bet to secure a research internship (Do not rule out Indian University
Programs - They are really good).
4. Talk to your Professors and Seniors and do not hesitate to ask for help from
anyone.
-Devansh Satra
Interact a lot with the professors, they expect healthy communication, much more
than constructive work.
-Mayank Gupta
06
GENERAL ADVICES
Know what you what to do. Building a good relationship with those at your
internship institute is very important .
-Alok Otta
Look out for opportunities Posted from the university and department form your
own end as the university is planning to cancelling the program for IITB students
from next year due to some dispute with our placement cell.
-Harshul Bhatt
Make a list of all the good universities you wanna work at, and then if they have
the labs that align with your interest. Search for all the programs through which
they intake students and the scholarship or the funding they provide. When
some or all of the tickboxes are checked, start applying and happy researching!
There's still one more thing to keep in mind, do NOT get disheartened by
rejections. One of the worst part of this experience is they don't provide what
made the profile got rejected, but you have to work on your profile everytime,
make it better than the last application and write things in the SOP that aligns
with the work of the professor. Thoroughly research what they want, what
they're doing, and what you can bring to the table, and it will definitely gonna hot
the bulls' eye.
-Kunal Kumar
07
GENERAL ADVICES
Try to give research a shot. I know it may seem boring from the outside, but
applications of the concepts learnt while half dozing in the morning class inside a
laboratory is the real fuel. There are no limit to the options in the world, the ocean
is so big that there's no point in crying for the small fish in the pond. Working in a
core internship made me realise that there are multitude of daily use objects
which have to be made my exorbitant amount of research, and we as 'IITians'
don't give much heed to them. Working in core/research gives me a
responsibility to deliver back to the society by standing on the shoulder of giants
and make a meaningful contribution.
-Adarsh
The acceptance rate in case of External Apping and Cold Mailing can be very less.
However I would just say that don't lose hope. That one acceptance you will get in
the end would be worth the pains you take.

RESEARCH PROJECT EXPERIENCE DURING

INTERNSHIP
It was a smooth experience. There were things which we didn't know but the
university provides us with a crash course related to AI and AWS to everyone so that
everyone lies on the same page before working on project. And infact the mentors
and professors were very helpful. They will explain you with clarity if you got lost
somewhere in project.
-Annant Jain
I didn't prepare much before the intern since I got it quite late into spring, however
the duration of the internship was enough to make good progress. I would suggest
people try RnD projects before the intern begins to gain more research experience,
so that you can utilise your summer optimally.
-Soham Joshi
Like any research, it all begins with extensive literature review, and the professor
and PhD guiding you help a lot, so it is not as daunting as one might think.
-Ganesh Iyer
I did not prepare for my internship much (the professor told me that there was no
reading as such required). Generally speaking, the physics and electronics courses
and labs offered as part of the core EP curriculum were quite helpful (especially the
electronics labs), along with electives that I took on Applied Solid State Physics,
Nanoelectronic Devices, and Quantum Information and Computing for the theoretical
background for the project. I would still advise other undergraduates who are
pursuing research internships in a new group (even though the professor says it is
not required) to read some of the most recent papers published by the group related
to your project topic and if you are very dedicated, I would suggest reading a PhD
thesis of a past group member who worked in the same field as your project.

INTERNSHIP
Going through the relevant research papers and books recommended by your
supervisor before coming to the internship will help a lot. Also, if you are going to use
some software or a particular technology that is new to you, giving time to practice it
beforehand reduces the amount of time to settle up while doing the project and you
can give more time to the actual research. Also, getting exposure to the professor,
and going through his published research and areas of work helps align your own
goals with his interests. It may sound like a lot but it really smoothens the internship
period.
-Disha Gupta
I made a friend here, and he had this notion that every human action is conjured for
the sake of a new experience. I don't know about anything else, but taking up this
international internship definitely aligns by this quote. Sure, it can be a daunting
experience, you don't know the work culture, the way the experiments performed, even
the pre-requisites, or what the experiment might actually look like. But that's the point,
you gotta put yourself into tough and new situations, and figure a way out. I quote a lot
(sometimes), and Steve Maraboli said that life doesn't get easier, only we get stronger.
And this is how you get stronger, just one of the many fishes in the ocean.
That was all motivation, as for preparation, do your research about the host country,
the host university, the lab and the professor. This will give you a rough idea how things
will gonna seem when you arrive there. Learning a foreign language can be daunting,
but learn the basic phrase to fit-in, make friends. But do also remember, it should also
match with your research domain if you have decided one already, otherwise, be open
to adventures.

Worked directly with the professor, he gave me a very good idea of the work in his
lab. He sent me his own published paper, and asked me for my views. I came up
with multiple interesting ideas, thus continuing his work and preparing for the
project.
-Mayank Gupta
I’ve always been passionate about conducting in-depth analysis on specific problems,
so I was excited to take on this project, especially since it involved working with real-
world data from Hong Kong. Prof. Edward Chung, along with guidance from some PhD
students, made the process smooth and enjoyable, providing valuable advice
throughout the internship.
-Nahush Kolhe
Fortunately, I was allowed to choose the specific problem that I had to work on. The
problem that I chose revolves around solving an optimal control problem.
Coincidentally, I had taken EE622 Optimal control system in the previous semester so I
had some foundations already for the internship
-Adityaya Dhande
The professor that I worked under gave me several research papers to read. Having
that information helps a lot while doing actual work. Having a strong coding and
mathematical background also helps in easing out the work for you.

I didn't separately prepare anything for the internship. One of the courses (EE755)
which I took in the 4th semester did help me. However, most of the things which I had
to work on, I actually learnt during the internship itself.
-Neel Rambhia
The initial few weeks can seem daunting at times, since most of the projects will
involve reading lot of research papers on the topic during these weeks. One can
prepare for this by getting acquainted with the jargon and reading about basic
concepts related to the internship topic. This will make the literature review phase
easier and faster.

in industry or academia.
-Annant Jain
Start application midway through the Autumn Semester, this will give you plenty of
time to look for back-up options as well as being among the first people to apply to
professors. As far as resume goes make sure you mention your research experience
so far, like RnD projects/seminar and in the interviews study the papers of your
potential advisor and be enthusiastic about their research.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Have a good look on the research ideas in the lab before applying. Understand the
research interests of the professors also, along with that have a good grasp and
understanding of these topics. The interview would be mostly on the resume, so
have a good grasp of the projects. Questions outside the resume would be surface
questions like on basic communications/ signal processing courses done as a part
of the BTech EE curriculum.
-Mayank Gupta
Sometimes programs are highly selective. I would personally advise contacting host
professors from these institutes before applying to the program and try to set up an
online interview or some form of communication. If the professor agrees upon the
internship beforehand, selection into the program is almost guaranteed. Try
contacting the Professors by November (or even earlier if you can) and write a well-
researched, compact (no one likes to read long emails), and straightforward email.
Make your CV/Resumes and get them reviewed by seniors as early as possible
(preferably by September), and start working on your SOPs, emails, cover letters,
getting LORs, etc as soon as possible.
-Devansh Satra
The application process will not be much cumbersome. Just the Japanese profs like
to see a good timeline with detailed methods of what you want to pursue, writing an

I had used the same old method. Do literature review, discuss about the problem
statement with the guide and the Professor and start working on it. Obviously,
there were many obstacles and challenges. My guides helped me a lot overcoming
them. In the end, I am happy that the professor was happy with my work.
-Neel Rambhia
As I mentioned before, your professor must agree atleast 4 months before the
onset of the internship and the application process will follow soon. Another thing
to note is that HKUST is very strict with regards to the exacts dates of internship
and also regarding the Life Insurance Claims. So complete all the procedures well
in time.

Grant Proposal EXPERIENCES
Just like usually said, research internships are quite flexible. The workload totally
depends on what you want to achieve. About the work culture, Japan has a good
balance of work and life and the people in the lab are hardworking as well as warm
and always willing to help you.
-Disha Gupta
The workload and work culture depends on the professor in charge of your project. In
my case it was pretty flexible and mostly chill, except for the last month when the
project became slightly hectic. Learning curve is not much of an issue since it is a 3
month internship as opposed to 2. Weekends are usually free so one gets to explore a
new country, meet new people and experience lot of new things. Overall it was quite
an enjoyable experience.
-Saukhya Telge
Absolutely amazing! Quite a bit of work load but really enjoyed the work so didn't
mind, work culture was excellent - had an amazing supervisor and research group,
quite steep learning curve when I reflect upon it but the process was smooth thanks
to a good work culture.

Grant Proposal EXPERIENCES
In research internships the work load is relatively low, It took about 3-4 hours a day to
finish the allotted work, though most of the work is self paced and sometimes you have to
ask work yourself as the pace is slow. The learning curve in general will be flatter if you
don't put effort from your side. For a good learning experience you should be taking
initiatives from your side.
-Faizan Ansari
The lab that I went to, Safe and Intelligent Autonomy Lab provided a very healthy
environment. All the members of the lab were quite supportive. There were weekly
group meetings held over lunch where one person would present some new/existing
ideas related to the lab's areas of research. These meetings offered a lot of learn, apart
from the specific problem statement that I was working on.
-Adityaya Dhande
My experience was quite smooth, as it aligned well with my working style-could work
anytime and anywhere, and I had the freedom to ask PhD students for help if needed. The
work culture was relaxed and gave ample time to explore Hong Kong. I enjoyed many
treks and found it easy to travel around, including taking ferries to different islands,
despite the language barrier. One downside was not having a dedicated workspace in the
same room as the other students working under my professor, which naturally limited
interaction. However, the library was an excellent space to work independently with
plenty of room, and I could always ask for help when necessary. The learning curve for
domain knowledge was relatively small, as most of the effort went into developing novel
methods for detecting anomalies.
-Nahush Kolhe

GENERAL
Grant Proposal EXPERIENCES
My initial 1-2 weeks were not very productive since I was still settling down and trying
to manage everything in a new place. The initial rigour during the literature review
was overwhelming but soon I started actually simulating the work given. Again there
learning the software was a headache but my guides helped me there. After that
things actually became pretty straight forward and monotonous until I was asked to
present my progress report at the end of a month. Since I didn't document and
organize things properly I had some trouble collecting everything together for the
presentation. But in the end everything went well. The second half of the internship
was again straight forward and monotonous but this time with a new problem
statement. I am happy that I was able to complete everything.
-Neel Rambhia
The work culture is really good. You can work at your own pace, come at any time,
leave at any time, without any restrictions even you can work from home without any
negative impact. The colleagues are always ready to help. The learning curve depends
on the exact problem statement you would be working on. For me, I had to work on a
simulator, which is used by very small amount of people. So even googling was not
able to help with most stuff. So learning was slow and difficult but is worth it once you
have learnt it. For others, it might be more implementation, so the learning depends
on your previous backgrounds.
