ASSIGNMENT 1
Motivation
Rainfall monitoring is based almost worldwide on a network of measuring stations (point
measurements) and the data so obtained is pertinent for hydrological investigations. For larger
catchments, a network of monitoring stations is required to capture the spatial variability of
rainfall and to determine the areal rainfall. Areal rainfall (basin precipitation) is required for the
investigation of fundamental questions in engineering hydrology. For example, it is used as input
for basin hydropower analysis, water balance, flood analysis or the estimation of design floods.
The density of the precipitation measuring network should ideally follow the spatial variability
of the precipitation (e.g. denser network in mountainous regions).
Contextual Scenario
The Government of Ghana (GoG) intends on deploying new reforms in water resources
management in the Volta Basin (Figure 1). The GoG understands the role of data to the success
of this reforms and thus want to ensure the accuracy or otherwise of existing rainfall data. As a
Consultant to the project, you are tasked to carry through a number of activities to affirm
confidence in the existing data. The Client (GoG) through it agency, the Ghana Meteorological
Agency, has made available rainfall data for the project area in question for the assigned task.

Data
The data for this exercise is located in the excel file “Rainfall Data”. The file contains monthly
rainfall data for eight stations (A-H) for a 24 year period.
Assignment Task
Submission Format
Submit a pdf file containing your solution/responses to the assigned task to the class rep. Where
necessary you may attach sections that have been carried out manually using images (images
should be focused and sharp). The first page (front matter) of the submission should contain the
following;
