Eddie Izzard is a British comedian and actor. He was born in Yemen in 1962, while his parents
were working there. His mother was working as a nurse and his father was working for an oil
company. Eddie Izzard first became interested in comedy when he was studying to be an
accountant at Sheffield University, in the north of England. He started telling jokes in comedy
clubs and soon became very popular. He first became famous as a comedian in 1991 and today
he often appears in comedy programs on television and at comedy events in the theatre. He
even tells jokes in other languages, especially French! In 1995, he started acting in plays and
appearing in movies. Since 1995, he has appeared in more than 30 movies. In 2009, he decided
to do something special to raise money for charity. Eddie Izzard is not really interested in sports
and is not an active athlete. However, he decided to run a marathon. Then, after only five weeks
training, he ran 43 marathons in 51 days to raise money for a charity called Sports Aid, which
helps hungry people in Africa. He ran 42 kilometers every day, six days a week for seven weeks.
He ran from London to Cardiff, in Wales. From Cardiff he ran to Belfast, in Northern Ireland, and
then to Edinburgh, in Scotland, and back to London. In total, he ran 1,100 miles (nearly 1,800
kilometers) in 51 days. He collected more than (€1,300,000) for the charity and received a
special BBC award for his charity work.
Sports Aid helps people by organizing events to collect money for charity.
