Lesson topic: Mental Math Strategies for Addition

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students will have developed mental math skills to be able to analyze
and solve addition problems in multiple ways.
Work on addition and subtraction to 1000
Develop mental math strategies and abilities to make sense of quantities
Develop and use multiple strategies to engage in problem solving

MATERIALS NEEDED HOOK/ INTRO


Warm-Up Word Problems
3 pencils
2 Low-floor high-ceiling questions
3 erasers
Try their best only to use their mental math
3 copies of the mental math worksheet
Write the answers down on their worksheet
Mental Math Powerpoint

LESSON STRUCTURE
Warm-up word problems (3 mins)
Outline learning objectives
What is mental math? - brief explanation of the concept
Ask a discussion question to the class (Can anyone think of where they might use this in real-life?)
Find the difference strategy with addition
Explain strategy and walk the class through an example question
Friendly numbers strategy with addition
Explain strategy and walk the class through an example question
Class activity #1 - Practice questions on the worksheet using the find the difference or friendly numbers strategy
Take the class through the first question using the find the difference strategy
Give time (5 mins) for class to complete the rest of the questions
Provide the answers to the worksheet
Open a discussion for students to describe how they solved their questions (2 mins)
Find the distance strategy with subtraction
Explain strategy and walk the class through an example question
Friendly numbers strategy with subtraction
Explain strategy and walk the class through an example question
