Course Title: Introduction to Statistics and Probability

B. COURSE OBJECTIVES/GOALS
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
i. Know the meaning and importance of statistics.
ii. Have an understanding of different type of statistics and differentiate them.
iii. Carry out a survey and establish the best method of collecting data for a
specific research.
iv. Suggest the best method to analyze the data collected descriptively.
v. Use descriptive method to analyze the data collected.
vi. Interpret the result of the descriptive analysis carried out.
vii. Predict the outcome of an event.
viii. Have basic understanding of probability.
ix. Understand how to construct the different graphical summaries most
especially bar chart, histogram, Stem and leaf display, Boxplots and five-
number-summary
C. METHOD OF DELIVERY/TEACHING AIDS
The course will be taught via Lectures using PowerPoint presentations.

Tutorial Sessions would also be designed to complement and enhance both
the lectures and the students’ appreciation of the course.
Course work assignments will be reviewed with the students.
Week 3: Measures of location and dispersion for grouped data & Exploratory Data Analyses
(EDA)
Week 4: Introduction to probability, Sample space, event, Multiplication and addition law in
Probability
Week 6: Test 1
Week 10: Permutation and combination, the use of permutation and combination in
evaluating probability,

Week 5 – Tutorial 1 (on Module 1)
Week 11 – Tutorial 2 ( Examination Revision)

F. STRUCTURE OF PROGRAMME/METHOD OF GRADING
1. Attendance at class meetings, In-class work / group work (periodically), quizzes
(some quizzes may be unannounced), homework, collected and graded and
solutions provided (counting for 10% of the total course marks);
2. Two tests, 1-hour duration for each (counting for 20% total of the course marks)
and
3. One (1) End-of-semester examination, 2 hours duration counting for 70% of the
total course marks.
