Future Tense

It indicates actions or events that have not yet occurred but are expected
to happen. In English, it is primarily expressed using "will" or "be going to."

The Usage of Future Tense :

- Predictions: "It will rain tomorrow."

- Decisions made at the moment:"I will call you."

- Plans : "We are going to travel next week."

Forms of Future Tense

Affirmative : Subject + will + base verb - Sbj + is/are going to + base V

Ex : "She will finish her homework. Ex : « I am going to start a new job


next month. »

Negative : Subject + will not (won't) + base ver - S + is/are not going to
+V

Ex: "He will not attend the meeting." Ex : « She is not going to attend the
meeting tomorrow. »

Interrogative : Will + subject + base verb?- Are/Is + S + going to +


base Verb ?

Ex: "Will they join us for dinner?" Ex : « Are they going to visit their
grandparents this weekend ? »

Summary :

« Going to » is often used for actions that have already been planned or
decided upon before the moment of speaking. It can refer to both near-
future and more distant future actions, but it emphasizes that there
is an intention or plan behind the action.

« Will » is typically used for spontaneous decisions, offers, promises, or


predictions that are not based on prior plans. It can also refer to actions in
the future without specifying how soon they will happen.

NOTE : Both « will » and « going to » are used to talk about the future, but
they serve different purposes, depending on the context of your
conversation.

Reflective Task :

Learners are required to pair up or in small groups ( of 3-4 ).Each group


will create five sentences using the future tense (affirmative, negative, and
interrogative forms) based on different contexts.

What will you do next weekend ?

Where will you travel in the next year ?

What will you have achieved by the end of this year ?

Will you learn a new skill in the future ?

What will your life look like in five years ?

P.S : Learners are free to choose any other subject if they wish for. Ex :
travel plans, career goals, personal aspirations… etc
