11. Valentines through the ages. The tradition of Valentine’s Day has a long
history originating in the 15th Century. This display shows examples of
valentine cards from the Georgian era when valentines were regularly
sent, the Victorian era: the “golden age” of valentines which saw huge
increase in their usage and finally the use of telegrams as valentines up to
the 1960s. The tradition of sending Valentines was given a boost by the
Postal Reforms of 1839 (cheap postage) and the advances in producing
lace paper and chromolithography pictures demonstrated at the 1851
Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations. Great Britain and
America were the most prolific senders of Valentines. The sending of
Valentine cards did not become common place until the early 19th century
as prior to that it was the practice to give expensive presents as a “love
token”.
