B. catalysts on the position of equilibrium.
C. changes in temperature on the rate of reaction.
D. changes in the concentration of reactants on the position of equilibrium.

2 Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of green plant cells. It uses solar energy to convert carbon
dioxide and water into chemical potential energy in the form of glucose:

6CO2(g) + 6H2O(l) → C6H12O6(aq) + 6O2(g)

Which of the following statements is true about this process?

A. Photosynthesis occurs in a closed system and a dynamic equilibrium is established.

B. Photosynthesis is an exothermic reaction, where energy is released to the surroundings.
C. The Gibbs free energy is positive, hence it is a non-spontaneous reaction under standard
conditions.
D. The Gibbs free energy is positive, hence the reverse reaction is spontaneous.

3 The following table shows the value of the ionisation constant (Kw) for pure water at various

10 The process of dissolution of ionic compounds in water is to be summarised in three steps.

 Step 1: Water molecules collide with the ionic lattice and ionic bonds are broken and ions are
released from the lattice.
 Step 2: _____________________________________________________________________
 Step 3: Ion-dipole forces stabilise the ions in the solution during the hydration process, and the
ions are less free to move about.

Which of the following statement best describes Step 2 of the above process?

A. Water molecules dissociate into ions and the free ions released re-form the lattice.
B. The hydrogen bonds between water molecules are broken and the free ions released from the
lattice are attracted to the water dipoles.
C. The covalent bonds in water molecules are broken and water dissociates into ions which form
bonds with the free ions released from the lattice.
D. The free ions released from the lattice surround water molecules, with the cations around the
oxygen end and the anions around the hydrogen end.

Question 17 (7 marks)
Year 12 Chemistry Module 5 Topic Test 2020 Girraween High School 13
In aqueous solution, Fe3+ ions react with SCN- ions to form the blood-red coloured FeSCN2+ ion. The
equilibrium is represented by the equation:

Fe3+(aq) + SCN-(aq) ⇌ FeSCN2+(aq)

As the colour of the solution is directly proportional to the [FeSCN2+] present, colourimetry can be used
to measure the [FeSCN2+] by comparing absorbance of an equilibrium mixture with that of the standard
solution, which then can be used to determine the Keq value of the equilibrium system at a certain
temperature.

Absorbance values of various standard solutions with known concentrations of FeSCN2+ are given below.

[FeSCN2+] (mol L-1) Absorbance

8.0 × 10−5 0.39
1.2 × 10−4 0.50
1.6 × 10−4 0.61
2.0 × 10−4 0.75

a) Use the data in the table above to construct a calibration curve. 3
