The working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer
weekend.
Do you agree or disagree?
My Version
Although ‘work-free days' that fall on weekends are highly anticipated
by the working class population, I equally agree and disagree on the
notion that the working hours should be reduced for employees
belonging to certain industries like education, hospitality, IT and so on
but I also disagree with the idea that staff belonging to industries such
as medical, health and sanitation, agriculture and a few others can
refrain from taking long weekends for the following reasons.
The prime reason, why I believe that certain professionals which are
required on a less imperative basis deserve longer weekends. Since it is
to be noted that ‘balance’ is the key for success in all aspects, be it in
profession, health and relationships. In contrast, individuals who excel
professionally often compromise the other two aspects to a great extent
due to poor time management. For example, there has been a
skyrocketing rate of mental health issues like depression and marital
problems, some even leading to divorce in the current day especially
among those educated and ambitious, only because they fail to make
time for themselves and for their loved ones. Besides, one can agree
that long weekends pave a way for people to rejuvenate themselves
better after a busy haul at work, further enabling them to be productive
for the new week.
On the other hand, this notion may not be applicable for all job
prospects. There are professions that require long and dedicated
working hours. For instance, those in the medical field, namely doctors,
nurses, health-care workers and many in other sectors where they are
obliged to deal with people on a regular or an exigency basis. Like
others, they require a fair amount of holidays, but if their time on-site is
reduced, their service and quality of work can get compromised.
In addition, there is a risk of various repercussions such as death, ill-
health and starvation. Therefore, people belonging to such emergency
services cannot afford go be absent from work for long weekends .
In conclusion, I equally agree that working-class individuals belonging to
less urgent services should have a fair amount of time on-site and
otherwise. Long weekends after a busy week are soothing and
impactful. But one must note that in certain professions which are
crucial for life, this may not be a feasible option due to the nature of
work and and the responsibility that is assigned/designated to that
position.
Vocabulary that can be used:
1. Extra downtime for employees
2. Recuperate: recover from illness or exertion.
3. Feasible option
4. Exigency: An urgent need or demand
