‭Orientation Information for Medical Students‬

‭Welcome to your rotation in community psychiatry at Libera Clinic.‬

‭ his orientation document will provide you with important information about‬

‭the program and its expectations. We hope this will help you settle in and‬
‭make the most of your experience. If you have any questions or require‬

‭1. Clinical Responsibilities‬

‭●‬ Y
‭ our engagement with patient care will be progressive. It will begin‬
‭with shadowing, allowing you to observe and gain insights into‬
‭real-world scenarios. Over time, you will gradually assume more‬
‭autonomy, involving activities such as report writing and patient‬
‭interviews. This gradual exposure is designed to enhance your skills‬
‭and confidence, ensuring a meaningful and useful experience during‬
‭your rotation.‬
‭●‬ W
‭ ednesday team meeting: You are expected to attend our weekly‬
‭Wednesday team meetings. This meeting serves as an important‬
‭platform for community check-in, complex case discussions, sharing‬
‭of important administrative or operational announcements,‬
‭collaboration with other members of the healthcare team, including‬
‭social workers, psychotherapists, nurses, and other support staff,‬
‭opportunities to seek guidance, share insights, and discuss‬
‭evidence-based approaches to complex cases, and occasional‬
‭presentation of educational materials, relevant research findings, or‬
‭guest speakers to enhance learning and professional development.‬

‭2. Academic Activities‬

‭●‬ ‭Presentation on a psychiatric topic of interest‬

‭ uring your internship, you will have the opportunity to deliver a 30‬
D
‭minute presentation. This can take the form of a journal club, where‬
‭you critically review and present a relevant research article, or a‬
‭comprehensive review of research around a topic of interest in the‬
‭field of psychiatry, quality assurance, or shared care. This‬
‭presentation will be part of our clinic’s regular Wednesday team‬
‭meetings.‬

‭●‬ ‭Video-assisted group learning‬


‭ s part of your academic activities, you may have the opportunity to‬

‭engage in group learning sessions facilitated by video footage of‬
‭patient encounters. This activity aims to enhance your clinical skills‬
‭and promote collaborative learning among your peers. The sessions‬
‭may involve watching recorded patient interviews or therapy‬
‭sessions, followed by a group discussion where you can analyze and‬
‭interpret the dynamics of the interaction, identify therapeutic‬
‭interventions, and explore alternative approaches. This activity‬
‭encourages critical thinking, enhances your ability to observe and‬
‭interpret non-verbal cues, and fosters a collaborative learning‬
‭environment where you can learn from each other's perspectives and‬
‭experiences.‬

‭●‬ D
‭ uring your rotation, we have scheduled a mid-rotation feedback‬
‭session with Dr. Xue. This session aims to provide insights, address‬
‭queries, and align your experience with your learning objectives.‬

‭3. Optional Opportunities‬

‭●‬ S
‭ hadowing opportunities: Throughout your internship, you may have‬
‭the option to shadow experienced clinicians in various specialties‬
‭within Libera Clinic and in the network of community psychiatrists.‬
‭This will allow you to observe different approaches to patient care,‬
‭gain insight into different therapeutic modalities, and broaden your‬
‭understanding of the field. Shadowing experiences are optional and‬
‭can be arranged based on availability and your specific interests.‬

‭4. Other General Expectations‬

‭ nderstand the presentations of psychosocial problems and distress‬
‭in primary care.‬
‭●‬ D ‭ iscuss ways in which partnerships between primary care and mental‬
‭health services are constructed, and can be improved.‬
‭●‬ ‭Expertly handle a broad array of clinical problems in adults, as they‬
‭present in primary care and community psychiatry care.‬
‭●‬ ‭Effectively provide consultation to the family physician, mental health‬
‭team, and the system (practice), bridging the gap between mental‬
‭health and primary care services.‬
‭●‬ ‭Communicate clearly and effectively with primary care staff, patients,‬
‭and their families via consultation reports and educational‬
‭interventions.‬
‭●‬ ‭Allocate finite health care resources appropriately.‬
‭●‬ ‭Advocate for both the needs of patients assessed and the needs of‬
‭primary care within the mental health system.‬

‭co-morbidity of psychiatric disorders commonly seen in community‬
‭psychiatry including treatment resistant depression, anxiety disorders,‬
‭ADHD, substance use disorders and personality disorders.‬
‭●‬ ‭Conduct a focused interview to develop a complete and pertinent‬
‭understanding of psychiatric problems from a biopsychosocial‬
‭perspective.‬
‭●‬ ‭Conduct a mental status examination including risk assessment.‬
‭●‬ ‭Appropriately use laboratory exams and other investigative‬
‭techniques‬
‭●‬ ‭Assess and manage urgent medical and psychiatric situations‬
