ASSIGNMENT 1: INTRODUCTION TO CRYSTALLOGRAPHY

The diagram below is a dodecahedron. It may be regarded as being based on a simple cube IJKHDEFG with
additional vertices AA’BB’CC’ located at the centers of adjacent cubes. The body center of the simple cube
IJKHDEFG is designated O and the vectors OA, OB and OC are the unit vectors of co-ordinates frame [010],
[100]and [001] respectively.

Answer following questions


(a) Index the following and indicate the state of symmetry
(i) B’O
(ii) AO
(iii) FO
(iv) KO
(b) Index the following faces
(i) GAKB’
(ii) BIA’E
(iii) A’JB’F
(iv) B’FCG
(c) Identify and index three mirror planes which are not parallel to any plane in the Dodecahedron.
(d) Index the edges of plane A’JB’F
(e) Index the zone axis of face EBIA’ and CEA’F
(f) Calculate the lengths of edges A’J and JB’
(g) Calculate angle A’JB’
(h) Calculate the separation between planes GAKB’ and EBIA’
(i) Calculate the area of face A’JB’F
(j) What is the ratio of the volume of the dodecahedron to that of the cube IJKHDEFG?
