To determine viscosity of a viscous oils at 122°F by Saybolt Furol Orifice

Viscometer.

Saybolt universal viscosity (SUV), and the related Saybolt FUROL viscosity (SFV), are specific
standardized tests producing measures of kinematic viscosity. FUROL is an acronym for fuel and
road oil. Saybolt universal viscosity is specified by the ASTM D2161.
Saybolt Viscometer type of instrument used to determine the viscosity of petroleum oils. It is
based on the time in seconds for a given volume of oil to pass through an aperture at a controlled
temperature and collect in a container with a volume of 60 millilitres.

Equipment and Materials

 Saybolt Furol Viscometer

 Thermometer (to monitor the temperature)
 Sample of viscous oil
 Timing device (stopwatch or timer)

Procedure

1. Preparation:
o Ensure the viscometer is clean and calibrated.
o Fill the viscometer's reservoir with the oil sample, ensuring there are no air
bubbles trapped.
2. Temperature Control:
o Heat the oil sample to the desired temperature (122°F). This can be done using a
water bath or another heating method.
o Use the thermometer to monitor the temperature accurately.
3. Testing:
o Once the oil reaches 122°F, allow it to stabilize for a few minutes.
o Open the orifice of the viscometer and allow the oil to flow through.
o Start the timer the moment the oil begins to flow from the orifice.
4. Timing:
o Measure the time taken for a specific volume of oil (usually 60 mL) to flow
through the orifice.
o Record this time in seconds.
5. Calculating Viscosity:
o The viscosity in Saybolt seconds (SUS) is given by the time taken for the oil to
flow through the orifice.
o Use the conversion factors if needed to convert this to centistokes (cSt) based on
the standard Saybolt Furol tables.

Calculations

 Viscosity (cSt) can be derived from the Saybolt seconds using empirical formulas or
reference tables specific to the Saybolt Furol viscometer.
Safety and Cleanup

 Handle the oil sample and viscometer with care.

 Clean the viscometer after use to prevent contamination of future samples.

Notes

 Make sure to conduct multiple trials for accuracy and average the results.
 Ensure the ambient conditions (like temperature) are consistent to reduce variability in
measurements.

This method provides a reliable way to measure the viscosity of viscous oils, and the Saybolt
Furol viscometer is widely used in industrial applications for such determinations.
