PROJECT OVERVIEW
• IL&FS ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION COMPANY LIMITED (IL&FS ENGINEERING SERVICES) HAS
SIGNED AN AGREEMENT WITH MINISTRY OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS (MORTH) FOR
EXECUTION OF A ROAD PROJECT THAT INVOLVES REHABILITATION AND UPGRADATION TO 2 LANES WITH
PAVED SHOULDERS CONFIGURATION AND STRENGTHENING OF BIRPUR-BIHPUR SECTION (FROM KM. 0.0
TO KM 106) OF NH-106 IN THE STATE OF BIHAR UNDER PHASE-I OF NHDP. THE TOTAL VALUE OF THE
PROJECT IS RS. 675 CRORES.
• THE PROJECT HIGHWAYS STARTS AT KM 106.00 AT UDAKISHANGANJ AND ENDS AT BIHPUR KM 136.00
AT JUNCTION WITH NH 31 IN BIHPUR (KM 321 OF NH31). THE ROAD TRAVERSES THROUGH PLAIN
TERRAIN WITH CARRIAGEWAY WIDTHS VARYING FROM 3.05 M TO 5.5 M. IN GENERAL THE EXISTING RIGHT
OF WAY VARIES FROM 20 M TO 24 M. THE HORIZONTAL ALIGNMENT OF THE ROAD IS GENERALLY FLUENT
WITHOUT SHARP CURVES. THERE IS A MAJOR •JUNCTIONS AND 20 MINOR JUNCTIONS EXISTING ALONG
THE ROAD. THE PROJECT ROAD MEETS NATIONAL HIGHWAYS (NH 31), AT THE FINISHING END.
PREPRATION OF EMBANKMENT
• SPECIFICATIONS FOR A ROAD EMBANKMENT REQUIRE THE SOIL TO BE COMPACTED TO A
MOIST UNIT WEIGHT OF 19.2 KN/M3 AT A MOISTURE CONTENT OF 17.5%. THE SOIL IS TO
BE OBTAINED FROM A BORROW AREA WHERE THE IN SITU DRY UNIT WEIGHT IS 15.9 KN/M3.
THE VOLUME OF THE FINISHED EMBANKMENT IS TO BE 1520 M3.
• THE OVERALL STRENGTH AND PERFORMANCE OF A PAVEMENT IS DEPENDENT NOT ONLY UPON
ITS DESIGN (INCLUDING BOTH MIX DESIGN AND STRUCTURAL DESIGN) BUT ALSO ON THE LOAD-
BEARING CAPACITY OF THE SUBGRADE SOIL. THUS, ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE TO INCREASE
THE LOAD-BEARING CAPACITY (OR STRUCTURAL SUPPORT) OF THE SUBGRADE SOIL WILL MOST
LIKELY IMPROVE THE PAVEMENT LOAD-BEARING CAPACITY AND THUS, PAVEMENT STRENGTH
AND PERFORMANCE.
• MAXIMUM DRY DENSITY OF BORROW AREA SOIL SHALL BE DETERMINED, AND THE SOIL SHALL
BE TESTED FOR DRY DENSITY, IF FOUND LESS THAN 97% OF M.D.D., THE LAYER SHALL BE
SCARIFIED MIXED WITH REQUIRED QUANTITY OF WATER AND COMPACTED WITH SOIL
VIBRATORY ROLLER TO ACHIEVE MINIMUM REQUIRED SPECIFIED DRY DENSITY.
