11-15.

A dataset is provided with the following statistics:

Mean(M)=75
Median(Md)=72
Standard Deviation=8

•Calculate Pearson's second coefficient of Skewness. Based on your result, identify whether the
dataset is symmetric, positively skewed, or negatively skewed. Show your solution.

16-20.
The scores of students in a class exam are grouped as follows:

Range Frequency

40-49 3

50-59 5

60-69 7

70-79 10

80-89 12

90-99 8

•Calculate the Mean of the scores.

•Identify the modal class and compute the Mode(Mo) using the formula:

Mo = L + ( fm - f1 ) ×w
(fm - f1) + (fm - f2)

L= Lower Boundary
Modal Class= Highest frequency
Fm= Frequency of Modal class
F1= Frequency before Modal class
F2= Frequency after Modal class
w= Class width

•Use Pearson's first coefficient of skewness formula: Sk= M - Mo

Standard Deviation

•Interpret the skewness. Is the distribution symmetric, positively skewed, or negatively skewed?
Solution

Problem 1:

Mean(M)=75
Median(Md)=72
Standard Deviation=8

Sk= M - Mo
8

Sk= 75 - 72
8

Sk= 3(3)
8

Sk= 1.125

Since Sk=1.125, the skewness is positive, meaning the data set is positively skewed.

Problem 2:

Step 1: Calculate the midpoints(x) and fx

Lower Limit + Upper Limit

x= 2

Range Midpoint(x) Frequency fx

40-49 44.5 3 133.5

50-59 54.5 5 272.5

60-69 64.5 7 451.5

70-79 74.5 10 745

80-89 84.5 12 1014

90-99 94.5 8 756

Total: Ęf= 45, Ęfx= 3372.5

Step 2: Use the Mean Formula:

x=Ęfx/Ěf

x=3372.5/45
=74.94

Step 3: Identify the Modal class

Since 80-89 has the highest frequency (f=12), it is the Modal class.

Step 4: Use the Mode formula

Mo = L + [ fm - f1 ]×w
(fm - f1) + (fm - f2)

L=79.5 (lower boundary of modal class)

f_m = 12 (frequency of modal class)
f_1 =10 (frequency of class before modal class)
f_2 = 8 (frequency of class after modal class)
w = 10 (class width)

Mo=79.5+( 12−10 ) ×10

(12+10)+(12−8)

Mo=79.5(2 × 10) = 79.5 +3.33= 82.83

6

Step 5= Calculate Pearson's first coefficient of Skewness

Sk= x - Mo
10

Sk= 74.94 - 82.83

10

Sk= -7.89 = -0.789

10

Since Sk = -0.789, the skewness is negative, meaning the distribution is negatively skewed
