NAVIGATION VI (REVIEWER)

ECDIS CHART
NAUTICAL CHART – This is the special purpose map design for the safe of navigation and issued by the
Government of hydrographic departments.
ELECTRONIC CHART – Display of a geographic or related information on the electronic screen such as
flat panel.
RASTER CHART – RNCs are a direct copy or a scan of the paper charts. It looks identical to a paper chart
as all the information shown is directly printed. The chart only grows larger or smaller as per the zooming
and when rotated, everything rotates.
VECTOR CHART – are computer-generated charts. The details can be turned on and off depending on the
requirement of the user, Objects can be clicked for more details on the same. Depths can also be monitored
to obtain a warning with regard to grounding. When zooming, the features grow large or small but the text
remains the same.
ENC – this is a official vector chart, complied with IHO standards and issued by any government
Hydrographic Office ,vector charts that also conform to International Hydrographic Organization (IHO)
specifications stated in IHO Publication S-57.
RNC – Raster Navigational Charts (RNCs) are raster graphics charts that conform to IHO S-61 and are
produced by converting paper charts to digital image by scanner.
ECDS – the General term for all electronics that is capable of displaying vessel position on an electronic
chart that is image on the screen as technology
ECS – navigation electronics system which electronically displays vessel position and relevant chart data
and information from an easiest databased but does not meet IMO requirements?
ELECTRONIC CHART DISPLAY AND INFORMATION SYSTEM (ECDIS) – is a geographic
information system used for nautical navigation that complies with International Maritime Organization
(IMO) regulations as an alternative to paper nautical charts.

What is ECDIS?
The Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) is an electronic navigational System. Where
it is accompanied with adequate back up arrangements it can be accepted as complying with the up to date
chart carriage requirement of Chapter V of the SOLAS Convention. This means it may be used as the
primary means of navigation.
In order to qualify as the primary means of navigation,

The equipment must be type approved and certified by the relevant flag state as complying with the IMO
Performance Standard for ECDIS.

Any system that has not undergone type approval and certification is known as an Electronic Chart System
(ECS). This equipment can be used as an aid to navigation but is not suitable for use as the primary means of
navigation.

1. SCOPE OF ECDIS
1.1 The primary function of ECDIS is to contribute to safe navigation.

NAVIGATION VI (REVIEWER)
1.2 ECDIS with adequate backup arrangements may be accepted as complying with the up-to-date charts
and nautical publications required by regulations V/19 and V/27 of the 1974 SOLAS Convention. For
the purpose of this document, the definition of electronic navigational data service (ENDS) encompasses
the nautical charts and nautical publications as defined in SOLAS chapter V and IHO standards in force.

1.5 ECDIS should reduce the navigational workload compared to using the paper chart and paper nautical
publications. It should enable the mariner to execute in a convenient and timely manner all route planning,
route monitoring and positioning. It should be capable of continuously indicating, monitoring and recording
the ship’s position.

3 DEFINITION
3.1 Electronic chart display and information system (ECDlS) means a navigation information system which
with adequate backup arrangements can be accepted as complying with the up-to-date nautical chart and
nautical publications required by SOLAS regulations V/19 and V/27, by displaying selected information
from a system database with positional information from navigation sensors to assist the mariner in route
planning and route monitoring and, if required, display additional navigation-related information.

3.2 Electronic navigational chart (ENC) means the database, standardized as to content, structure and
format, issued for use with ECDIS by or on the authority of a government, authorized hydrographic office or
other relevant government institution, and conforming to IHO standards. The ENC contains all the nautical
chart information necessary for safe navigation.

3.3 Electronic navigational data service (ENDS) means a special-purpose database compiled from nautical
chart and nautical publication data, standardized as to content, structure and format, issued for use with
ECDIS by or on the authority of a government, authorized hydrographic office or other relevant government
institution, and conforming to IHO standards; and, which is designed to meet the requirement of marine
navigation and the nautical charts and nautical publications carriage requirements in SOLAS regulations
V/19 and V/27. The navigational base layer of ENDS is the electronic navigational chart (ENC).

3.4 System database means a database, in the manufacturer's internal ECDIS format, resulting
from the lossless transformation of the ENDS contents and its updates. It is this database that is accessed by
ECDIS for the display generation and other navigational functions, and is equivalent
to up-to-date ENDS.

3.5 Standard display is the display mode intended to be used as a minimum during route planning and route
monitoring. The chart content is listed in appendix 2.

3.6 Display base means the chart content as listed in appendix 2 and which cannot be removed from the
display. It is not intended to be sufficient for safe navigation.

11.5 Voyage recording

11.5.3 In addition, ECDIS should record the complete track for the entire voyage, with time marks at
intervals not exceeding 4 hours.

ECDIS DISPLAY LAYERS
ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) layers refer to the different types of information
that can be displayed on an electronic navigational chart (ENC) within an ECDIS system. These layers are
essential for providing navigators with comprehensive and customizable information for safe navigation.
Here are some common ECDIS layers:

1. Base Layer: This includes essential navigational information such as coastline, depth contours, and
navigational aids.

Base display to be permanently shown on the ECDIS display, consisting of:

• Coastline (high water).
• Own ship’s safety contour.
• Isolated underwater dangers of depths less than the safety contour which lie within the safe waters defined
by the safety contour.
• Isolated dangers which lie within the safe water defined by the safety contour, such as fixed structures,
overhead wires, etc.
• Scale, range and north arrow;
• Units of depth and height; and
• Display Mode

2. Standard Display Layer: This typically includes additional information

Important for navigation, such as buoys, lights, beacons, and traffic separation schemes.
• Display base.
• Drying line.
• Buoys, beacons, other aids to navigation and fixed structures.
• Boundaries of fairways, channels, etc.
• Visual and radar conspicuous features.
• Prohibited and restricted areas.
• Chart scale boundaries.
• Indication of cautionary notes.
• Ship routeing systems and ferry routes.
• Archipelagic sea lanes.

All other information, to be displayed individually on demand, for example:

• Spot soundings.
• Submarine cables and pipelines.
• Details of all isolated dangers.
• Details of aids to navigation.
• Contents of cautionary notes.
• ENC edition date.
• Most recent chart update number.
• Magnetic variation.
• Graticule.

NAVIGATION VI (REVIEWER)
• Place names.

4. Additional Layers: These can include overlays for more specific information like tidal information,
weather data, ice conditions, or specific warnings and notices to mariners.
5. User-Defined Layers: ECDIS systems often allow navigators to customize their display by adding or
removing layers based on their specific needs or preferences.
6. Route Planning Layer: This layer is used for planning and displaying intended routes, waypoints, and
voyage information.
