MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Lab 4 Management Decision Problem (Individual Assignment)

Resources needed:

1. A windows PC with Microsoft Word installed. If you need this software, follow
these steps to install it.

Scenario: As the head of a small insurance company with six employees, you are concerned
about how effectively your company is using its networking and human resources. Budgets are
tight, and you are struggling to meet payrolls because employees are reporting many overtime
hours. You do not believe that the employees have a sufficiently heavy workload to warrant
working longer hours and are looking into the amount of time they spend on the Internet.
Each employee uses a computer with Internet access on the job. Review a sample of your
company’s weekly report of employee web usage, which can be found below.

Deliverables:

Hint: Copying and pasting the data above into a spreadsheet program will give you the ability
to mine the data in a meaningful way to help with your analysis.
• Calculate the total amount of time each employee spent on the web for the week
and the total amount of time that company computers were used for this purpose.

Rank the employees in the order of the amount of time each spent online. (Include
any tables/spreadsheets that you created 20 Points)

• Do your findings and the contents of the report indicate any ethical problems
employees are creating?
Yes, the findings from the above inside the table illustrates the violation of ethics
by the employees in the insurance company. The employees were taking their
internet time and using it for their own internet interests like shopping,
socializing with others, listening to music, and just taking care of their personal
business (which could have been checking their emails and returning replies).
The biggest thing that can be taken from the employee’s usage is that employees
are reporting overtime hours because they wasted their time on non-work-related
websites, which is stealing company’s time. The company needs to consider
blocking non-work-related websites on their computers.
• Is the company creating an ethical problem by monitoring its employees’ use of
the Internet? (10 Points)
No, it is completely ethical for a company to check on their employee’s usage,
because the company pays for the internet that they use. It would be an issue of
ethics if it were their personal internet.
• Use the guidelines for ethical analysis presented in this chapter to develop a
solution to the problems you have identified.
1. Identify and describe the facts clearly:
A solution cannot be determined without getting the full truth behind
what is causing the problem. The problem may not always be what it
seems especially with tables and spreadsheets reporting but running
these types of reports helps the company find out the who, what,
where, when, how, and why.
2. Defined the conflict or dilemma and identify the higher-order values
involved:
The conflict involved is the company is struggling to meet payrolls
because their staff are working pass regular hours and going into
overtime. The company believes that the workload can be completed
within the regular work hours. The higher-order values involved are
freedom and privacy.
3. Identify the stakeholders:
The customers, investors, communities, owner have an interest in
the outcome, investment in the situation, and vocal opinions.
4. Identify the options that you can reasonably take.
One option that can be taken is I can take the web user report and
analyze the information thoroughly. Secondly, I could do all the jobs
or tasks myself and see how long it would take me to get everything
done.
5. Identify the potential consequences of your options:
One consequence of my option could be to meet with each employee
about their non-related web usage to the work tasks and have them
to sign documents explaining what would happen if they misused
the company time from here on out. Secondly, I could just find a
software that could block all non-related work websites such as
Nordstrom and iTunes.
