UNIT 1 TEXT QUESTIONS
1. Explain the difference between a tide and a current.
Both are a phenomenon formed in the sea but both have differences, for
example The tide refers to the periodic movement of sea level, caused mainly
by the gravitational attraction of the Moon and, to a lesser extent, the Sun. A
current contains continuous movements of water in the ocean, which can be
shallow or deep.
2. Why are tidal patterns generally predictable?
The tidal patterns are due to the gravitational influence of the Moon and the
Sun on the Earth. Some of the factors are: the positions of the moon and the
sun, as well as the lunar faces and the topography of the water masses.
3. How do waves contribute to erosion?
Waves contribute to erosion by mechanical impact, abrasion, sediment
transport, chemical attack because sea water transported by waves can
contain salts and other chemical compounds,
4. Explain how the grunion depends on the changes in tide for the
survival of its species.
The grunion breeds on the coast during high tide in spring and summer.
Females bury their eggs in wet beach sand during high tide, just before the
waves break.
when the tide is high again Water pressure and wave motion help the small
larval fish.
When the tide is low, the males take the opportunity to feed on small
invertebrates that are exposed on the beach by the low tide. Any alteration to
ecosystems or the environment, no matter how minimal, alters an entire
network.
5. Why is the term “food web” more accurate than the term “food chain”?
It is easier to visualize, imagine how we are all connected.
Critical Thinking Questions
1. Will the seasonal consequences of tides, such as flooding, occur in the
same season all around the globe? Explain your answer.
No, the seasonal consequences of tides are not the same in all places.
There are many factors that affect the severity of situations such as latitude, seasons
of the year and both geographical and topographical conditions.
2. What does the disappearance of several small Solomon Islands show?
Should other nations be concerned about their disappearance? Explain your
answer.
As we already said, any change in ecosystems or the environment is a red flag, just
as we and other organizations have to worry and do something to change what is
wrong.
3. In which level of the intertidal zone would you expect to find the most types
of wildlife in the ecosystem?
The greatest diversity of types of wildlife is generally found in the low intertidal zone
since it is the area in which it has the greatest access to oxygen and for several other
factors.
4. Do you think that the blue crab can survive out of water? Explain your
answer.
The blue crab has the ability to survive out of the water for several hours, although for
a limited time due to its brachchias that absorb a large amount of water and when it
is outside it collects it for oxygenation.
