8.21 A soft-drink machine is regulated so that the amount of drink dispensed averages
240 milliliters with a standard deviation of 15 milliliters. Periodically, the machine is
checked by taking a sample of 40 drinks and computing the average content. If the
mean of the 40 drinks is a value within the interval μX¯ ± 2σX¯ , the machine is thought
to be operating satisfactorily; otherwise, adjustments are made. In Section 8.3, the
company official found the mean of 40 drinks to be ¯x = 236 milliliters and concluded
that the machine needed no adjustment. Was this a reasonable decision?
8.26 The amount of time that a vehicle spends in a petrol bunk is a random variable with
the mean μ = 4.5 minutes and a standard deviation σ = 1.8 minutes. If a random sample
of 24 vehicles is observed, find the probability that its mean time at the petrol bunk is
(a) at most 3.6 minutes
(b) more than 5.5 minutes
(c) at least 3.2 minutes but less than 4 minutes
8.31 Suppose 18 specimens were used for each type of paint in an experiment and ¯xA
−x¯B , the actual difference in mean drying time, turned out to be 1.0.
(a) Does this seem to be a reasonable result if the two population mean drying times
truly are equal?
(b) If someone did the experiment 10,000 times under the condition that μA = μB , in
how many of those 10,000 experiments would there be a difference ¯xA − x¯B that was
as large as (or larger than) 1.0?
