Definitions
Double Block and Bleed The DBB feature of the valve or valves in the ability to
segregate two pressure sources and to bleed/vent pressure
in the void between the two sealing elements (blocks). The
bleed may be in the pipework/pipeline when two valves are
used, or in the valve body between the two seats when the
valve has the DBB feature.

Ejector A device that uses higher pressure fluid to impart motive

force on a lower pressure fluid.
Block Valve Any type of valve that is used to close off flow, such as
flow through a pipeline or out of a tank.
Quick Connects A quick connect fitting, also called a quick disconnect or
quick release coupling, is a coupling used to provide a fast,
make-or-break connection of fluid transfer lines.
Manual Sampling System An assembly (pipe or tubing, valves and portable receiver)
used to manually collect a process fluid sample of crude
from a pipeline.
Sample Loop A low-volume bypass diverted from the main process
stream.
Sampling All the steps required to obtain a sample that is
representative sample of the contents of any pipe, tank, or
other vessel and to place that sample into a container from
which a representative test specimen can be taken for
analysis.
Closed Drain System A closed drain system is a collection system consisting of
piping and vessels connected to selected hydrocarbon
drains for the containment, recovery or safe disposal of
collected liquids, which would otherwise cause hazardous
releases of hydrocarbon or H2S to the atmosphere or to
OWDS.
Flash Evaporation Partial evaporation that occurs when a saturated liquid
stream undergoes a reduction in pressure by passing
through a throttling valve or other throttling device.
High-Pour Point Materials Materials that have a pour point within 18°F (10°C) of the
ambient temperature (e.g., un-dewaxed vacuum gas oil).
Light-ends Hydrocarbons Liquid hydrocarbons either as mixtures or pure component
products that have a True Vapor Pressure (TVP) higher
than 15 psia (103 kPa abs) at 130°F (54°C). Examples of
such liquids include mixtures of propane, butanes,
pentanes, etc.
Oily Water Mixtures of hydrocarbon residues and water. Oily water is
considered contaminated water released during normal
operation.
Pour Point Pour point of a liquid is the lowest temperature at which the
liquid will just flow under standards test conditions as
defined by ASTM D97, Standards Test Method for Pour
Point of Petroleum Oils (D97/IP 15).

Pressurized Hydrocarbons Pressurized hydrocarbons shall mean that the pressure in

the source equipment at the time of drainage is sufficient to
overcome the hydraulic and static system pressure drop to
transfer liquid hydrocarbons to a CDS.
Sour Water Water that is characterized by any of the following, H2S
(>10 ppmw), NH3 (> 20 ppmw), water in contact with
flammable hydrocarbons and other toxic components such
as benzene, phenols, etc.
Delta P device Any device or instruments that creates a pressure drop to
ensure a sufficient flow through the loop.
5. HSE Precautions
Sampling point should be designed to provide the following minimum safety
requirements
5.1 All personnel performing sampling operations should be adequately trained and
should adhere to all safety measures.
5.2 Particular caution is necessary with crude oil as it may contain varying amounts
of dissolved toxic and flammable gases, e.g., hydrogen sulfide (sour crude) an
extremely toxic gas.
5.3 Care and good judgment should be taken to ensure that samples are obtained that
represent the general characteristic average condition of the material.
5.4 Since many petroleum vapors are toxic and flammable, avoid breathing them,
igniting them from an open flame, burning embers, or a spark produced by static
electricity.
5.5 Never flush liquid samples (containing volatile hydrocarbon and H2S) to open
drains or to the ground.
5.6 As safety precaution, T-40 (H2S detector) and proper PPE should be used while
sampling crude oil.
5.7 Safe to collect the samples with minimum release of hydrocarbon or hazardous
material to atmosphere.
5.8 Vented gas to be directed to flare, pressure sewer or to slop tank/safe location for
remote Wellheads.
5.9 Liquid to be drained to pressure sewer or suitable containment.
5.10 Sample drain should not be open to ground in hydrocarbon service or
hydrocarbon contaminated fluids.
5.11 Drains to be connected to slop tanks for field sample stations.

6. Minimum Sampling Point Design Requirements

General Requirements
A manual sampling system should consist of the following:
A sampling probe inserted in the stream to collect sample from flowing stream
facing upstream.
Piping between probe and sample reciever should be as short as possible to
enable location of sample receiver close to the sample probe.
Process vents and drains should not be used as sample connections.
All sample piping should be hydrostatically tested as per ASME B31.3.
The layout of the equipment should permit easy installation or removal of the
sample extractor from the main piping using any required extraction tool.
Sample heaters and coolers may be provided where necessary and should be
designed for the pressure and temperature conditions of the stream being
sampled. Materials of construction should be suitable for the process fluid.
Sampling points should have a unique tag number as per the facility tagging
scheme and applicable corporate engineering procedure and standard.
Sampling point(s) should have P&ID drawings developed showing details of
interconnecting lines, vessels and other equipment and instrumentation.
Design Requirments
Use double block for any class 900 # (or higher) and H2 and H2S service.
Sampling bottles/cylinders should be as per process conditions (pressure,
temperature, composition etc.).
Delta P device is any device or instruments that creates a pressure drop to
ensure a sufficient flow through the loop.
Sample cooler shall be specified for a process temperature of 140°F and over,
according to the personnel protection, SAES-B-053, Section 5.9.
The sample cooler should be internally coated and the coil material should be
as per system material specifications.
Level/pressure measurements and indication to be provided on the two phase
sampling pot.
Enhanced design to be provided to prevent oil splash during samples taking.
Wet crude oil sample stations need to be hydraulically designed for free
gravity flow and drainage during sampling.
Drain funnels to be of adequate size, depth and dimension. Drains into the
drain funnels to be centered to avoid oil splash.
Gas or condensate sampling cylinders to be mounted in vertical position.
Personal protection to be addressed for high temperature sampling at the field.
Pipe sizing should be based on the stream process condition. This best
practice recommends minimum sizes, design contractor to come up with the
final sizing and design in accordance with applicable Saudi Aramco

TANK SAMPLING
Notes:
 Lower sample is a spot sample of liquid from the middle of the lower one-third of
the tank’s content (a distance of five-sixths of the depth liquid below the liquid’s
surface).
 Middle sample is a spot sample taken from the middle of a tank’s contents (a
distance of one half of the depth of liquid below the liquid’s surface).
 Upper sample is a spot sample taken from the middle of the upper one third of the
tank’s contents (a distance of one-sixth of the depth of the liquid below the
liquid’s
 Aboveground vertical tanks should have side sample taps to allow for
representative tank samples be taken for Upper, Middle, and Lower parts of the
tank continents as indicated by ASTM D4057.
 Each sampling tap should have the required flushing time stenciled on the tank
shell to determine the proper flushing time or quantity needed to get fresh product
from that tank level.
 Sampling taps should be connected to an 80 liter or more graduated glass sample
jar with integral hydrometer/ thermometer assemblies “closed sampling system”
to replace the need for carrying samples in open containers for disposal.
 It is preferable to install a single glass sample jar that is capable of being utilized
to obtain both tank drain line samples and tank product composite samples.
