1. Scope
This best practice is to provide guidelines for the safe design and installation of manual
sampling system from process stream. To enhance the personnel safety, sampling
accuracy and minimizing data discrepancy that is hindering accurate measurement of
water, chemicals, gas and liquid hydrocarbons quality across upstream and downstream
facilities.
Scope covers streams that are sampled in Saudi Aramco's onsite and offsite facilities,
including but not limited to transportation pipelines and other types of hydrocarbons
processing or handling facilities where a manual sampling is required:

TANK SAMPLING
Notes:
Lower sample is a spot sample of liquid from the middle of the lower one-third of
the tank’s content (a distance of five-sixths of the depth liquid below the liquid’s
surface).
Middle sample is a spot sample taken from the middle of a tank’s contents (a

Aboveground vertical tanks should have side sample taps to allow for
representative tank samples be taken for Upper, Middle, and Lower parts of the
tank continents as indicated by ASTM D4057.
Each sampling tap should have the required flushing time stenciled on the tank
shell to determine the proper flushing time or quantity needed to get fresh product
from that tank level.
Sampling taps should be connected to an 80 liter or more graduated glass sample
jar with integral hydrometer/ thermometer assemblies “closed sampling system”
to replace the need for carrying samples in open containers for disposal.
It is preferable to install a single glass sample jar that is capable of being utilized
to obtain both tank drain line samples and tank product composite samples.
