25. The French Revolution took place in 1789.
Impact on Europe :
1. Formation of Jacobin Clubs : When the news of the Revolution reached the different cities of Europe,
students and other members of educated middle classes began setting up Jacobin Clubs. Their activities
and campaigns prepared the way for the French armies which moved into Holland, Belgium, Switzerland
and much of Italy in the 1790s.
2. Liberalisation of people : The revolutionaries further declared that it was the mission and the destiny of the
French nation to liberate the peoples of Europe from depotism, in other words to help other peoples of
Europe to become nations.
3. Rise of Napoleon and its impact : The conditions created by the revolution paved way for Napoleon who
took several steps to reform the economy of Europe. He introduced uniform laws, standardised weights and
measures, and a common national currency.
OR
Jacobin Club was a political club that came into existence in the aftermath of the French Revolution. The
activities and campaigns of this club helped spread the idea of nationalism abroad in the following manner :
(i) A collective identity among the French was created by the club members.
(ii) The notion of equal rights for the people was stressed upon by the club members giving rise to a centralised
idea of equality among people.
(iii) Their activities and campaigns prepared the way for the French armies which moved into Holland, Begium,

produced globally.

there is a less possibility of resistance from the people because the government has followed a proper procedure.
On the other hand, the non-democratic governments can take decisions quickly, but there is a possibility that it
is not accepted by the people because no procedure has been followed.
Transparency is the most important feature of a democratic government. Under democracy, a citizen, who wants
to know if a decision was taken through the correct procedures, can find this out. He/She has the right and the
means to examine the process of decision making. This is known as transparency. This factor would often be
missing from a non-democratic government.

29. (i) The medium of exchange is an important function of money. It means that money acts as an intermediary for
the goods and services in an exchange of transaction. Use of money as a medium of exchange has removed
the major difficulty of double coincidence of wants in the barter system.
(ii) The ‘medium of exchange’ function of money implies that money is generally acceptable by the people.
They can buy goods and services they need using money. That is, money facilitates multilateral trade.

lack of internal democracy some leaders assume greater power to make decisions in the name of the party.

33. (i) Accepting deposits and lending money are the primary functions of a bank.
(ii) Banks keep only a small proportion of their deposits as cash with themselves. For example, banks in India
these days hold about 15 per cent of their deposits as cash. This is kept as a provision to pay the depositors
who might come to withdraw money from the bank.
(iii) Banks use the major portion of the deposits to extend loans. Banks make use of the deposits to meet the
loan requirements of the people.
(iv) In this way, banks mediate between those who have surplus funds (the depositors) and those who are in
need of these funds (the borrowers).
(v) Banks charge a higher interest rate on loans than what they offer on deposits. The difference between what
is charged from the borrowers and what is paid to the depositors is their main source of income.

Self help groups are informal associations of people who choose to come together to find ways to improve their
living conditions. Importance of self help groups can be highlighted from given points :
(i) Absence of collateral is one of the major reasons which prevents the poor from getting bank loans. Whereas,
there is no need for collateral or difficult paper work to take loans from SHGs.
(ii) SHGs have lower interest rate than that of moneylenders or traders. They can get timely loans for a variety
of purposes.
(iii) It creates employment opportunities for the members who are rural poor, particularly women.
(iv) It encourages regular savings of the rural poor.
(v) SHGs help rural women not only to become financially self-reliant but also, the regular meetings of the group
provide a platform to discuss and act on a variety of social issues such as health, nutrition, domestic
violence, etc.
