Introduction

The ceramic industry came into existence about a century ago and has matured over time to
form an industrial base. Over the years, the industry has been modernizing through new
innovations in product profile, quality and design to emerge as a modern, world – class
industry, ready to take on global competition.
The Ceramics Industry covers a vast expanse of product categories, including sanitary ware,
refractories, cement, advanced ceramics and ceramic tiles. Ceramics are now being used more
frequently in a variety of applications due to its properties, which include chemical inertness,
high melting temperatures, hardness, and low electrical and thermal conductivity.
Lured by the demographic profile and improving prospects of housing and construction sector,
many foreign companies are entering the Indian ceramics sector with a view to leverage the
opportunity.
The ceramic sector in India has both organized (40%)and unorganized players (60%), and mostly
the players are situated in Morbi, Rajkot and other clusters.

Fuelled by the growing construction sector in the country and a rise in exports to the advanced
nations, the Indian ceramic industry intends to be the largest producer in the world,

industries, such as aerospace, defence, power
generation, automobile, healthcare etc owing to
their higher strength, stability, abrasion and
Increased demand for the
chemical resistance is primarily driving the global
advanced ceramics advanced ceramics market.
► Metals, polymeric materials, and refractory
materials are being replaced by advanced ceramics
due to their toughness, chemical inertness, and high-
temperature capabilities.

► Ceramic materials are used in spinal correction,

dental implants, and bone replacement segments.
The medical implants market has great potential to
Biomedical applications grow in coming years.
► Globally, ceramics are largely preferred for being
used inside human bodies owing to exceptional wear
resistance and chemical inertness.

8
Growth Drivers
► The electro-ceramics (can handle a large load
compared to traditional materials) used in industrial-
grade products are utilized in the manufacturing of
car brakes and clutches.
► Automotive applications of these materials include
Industrial & automotive sensors, catalytic converter substrates, and other
electrical and mechanical components.
applications
► As Gujarat has emerged as the automobile
manufacturing hub for India, diversifying in
production of ceramics in automobiles can be a
pathway to growth.

► The semiconductor industry in India is 100% import

driven. Though, India has developed expertise in
chip designing and in delivering technical services
around microchip design. Most of the global
companies design their chips in India and they take
the prototypes and send it to respective base
Advent of countries for manufacturing.
Semiconductors ► Plasma processing is a critical part of semiconductor
manufacturing. Typically, a plasma gas is generated
in a vacuum. Ceramics excel in these applications
because they can withstand corrosive environments
and have exceptional purity. Hence, ceramics with
their excellent plasma resistance, are chosen over
resins, glass, and metals for use in semiconductor
manufacturing.

► The Advanced ceramics are eco-friendly alternatives

to traditional materials due to their low
environmental impact, longer lifespan and
recyclability.
Sustainability ► As industries strive to reduce their carbon footprint
and adopt sustainable practices, advanced ceramics
are being favoured for their potential to contribute
to a greener and more sustainable future.

Ceramic Ecosystem in
Gujarat
Overview: Ceramic Sector in Gujarat
Gujarat has highly developed ceramics industry concentrated in the areas of Morbi, Wankaner,
Bamanbor, Shapar-Veraval areas in Rajkot district and Thangarh in Surendranagar district.
Morbi in Gujarat is often termed as the Ceramic Hub of India.

All these areas in Saurashtra region have abundance of red soil which is one of the essential
raw materials for the ceramics industry which is used to manufacture low-cost items such as
terracotta, bricks, roof, wall and floor tiles.

Project Information
Overview: Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation
Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), established in 1962 by Government of
Gujarat, as the nodal agency to oversee industrial development in the state by setting up
industrial estates and promoting industrial growth. GIDC has established total 239 estates till
date. The primary functions of the corporation are to
1. Identify, acquire and aggregate land in the state suitable for industrial development
2. Plan and develop aggregated land into industrial areas
3. Plotting and allotment of land
4. Providing basic infrastructure in industrial areas
Additionally, to address specific needs, GIDC also develops special infrastructure like water
augmentation and distribution infrastructure, culverts, over bridges, training centres,
warehouses, etc. GIDC also upgrades existing infrastructure facilities in the established
industrial estates periodically.
Ceramic Park at Jambudiya-Paneli, Morbi
GIDC is developing ceramic park at Jambudiya-Paneli in Morbi, Rajkot. The Park will be spread
across 425 Ha of land. The Park is in near vicinity of Morbi ceramic cluster and will leverage
from the existing strong ecosystem for the industry.
The ceramic park will enhance the presence of ceramic industries across the value chain in tiles
& sanitaryware and attract new investments in niche segments like industrial ceramics and
advanced ceramics.
Readily available manpower, raw materials and excellent connectivity provides a conducive
ecosystem for developing this park.
