MOTHER,S DAY
-J.B. Priestley
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
➢ The novelist, playwright and broadcaster, John Boynton ‘J
B’ Priestley, was born in Yorkshire in 1894. At the age of 16
he took a job as a junior clerk at a local wool firm and
started writing at night.
➢ During the First World War, Priestley was posted to France
and was badly wounded. After the war he rarely spoke of
these experiences. When he returned to Britain, he attended
Cambridge University and started to write again, mainly
short pieces for local periodicals, before embarking on a
career as a freelance writer in London. By the age of 30 he
was well established as an essayist, critic and a novelist.
➢ During the Second World War Priestley was a regular and
influential broadcaster on the BBC.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
• Priestley also stood – unsuccessfully – as an
independent candidate in the 1945 general
election, and was instrumental in the founding
of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament
(CND).
• Priestley was a prolific and industrious writer.
He published 39 plays and 26 novels as well as
volumes of essays and criticism, and continued
to write into old age. He died on 14 August
1984.
CENTRAL THEME
➢ The main idea of the play is the status of women
in their own house. The housewife serves her
family with complete devotion, sincerity and love
without even asking for any favour or any love in
return. She is however, never given the regard,
love, attention or thanks by the family members.
➢ The idea is worked out by the portrayal of Pearson
Family. Mrs Pearson is harassed in the same way.
Her daughter Doris, son Cyril, husband George take
her advices for granted and have become
thoughtless and selfish. The interchange of
personalities and the harsh treatment meted out
to them by the personality of Mrs.Fitzgerald(in the
body of Mrs. Pearson) reforms them and they obey
their mother willingly after realising her love and
importance for them.
IF YOU’RE WORRIED
ABOUT BEING A
GOOD MOTHER IT
MEANS YOU
ALREADY ARE ONE.

As a mama, I’m not perfect.

I make mistakes. I forget
things. I lose my cool. And
some days I go a little
crazy. But it’s okay because
in the end, no one could
ever love my child the way
I do.
-Proud happy mama

MESSAGE
The play, Mother’s Day written by J.B. Priestly,
gives a very valuable and relevant message. The
playwright has tried to bring the issue of mothers
being neglected and mistreated by their family
members; they treat her like a servant. Through
the events in the play, the playwright masterfully
portrays the plight of mothers at almost all
homes. They do all the work; they do most of the
sacrifices; and yet they don’t get enough respect
and appreciation from family members. The
playwright has indirectly taught us that we must
respect our mothers more and be grateful to
them for what they do for us.
MESSAGE
Even though the mother is often a housewife,
she should not be ignored. Her efforts must
be recognized and she must be appreciated
for the hard work that she does to keep the
house in order. A mother also needs
rest/leisure and some time to herself although
she does not go to work outside the house. In
other words, weekends and holidays are not
restricted to those who go out to work or are
in service. Mothers must never be taken for
granted by children and a husband should not
depend on his wife to do everything for him.
VALUE POINTS
➢ The job of a mother in a family is actually a twenty four hour job and
the mother does not have the luxury of even enjoying any weekend,
any holiday.
➢ The popular conception is that only those who are in service have to
work hard. The mother who stays at home has a leisurely life. The
other members in the family always take the work that the mother
does at home for granted and gives no credit for that.
➢ The children in a family go on to believe that the job of the mother is
to keep herself in the beck and call of her children and so is the
thinking of the husband of the family towards his wife.
➢ The mother needs to be harsh and assertive every now and then with
her children and husband, reminding them that the work she does is a
round the clock work and is valued much more than theirs.
➢ If the mother of the family turns out to be too soft with her attitude
towards her children and husband, then the children are bound to be
led astray and spoilt as is the case with Cyril and Doris Pearson.
➢ Always a little bit of caution, cold looks, strong words and body
language from the mother help the atmosphere of the family ordered
and the health wholesome.
