Like everyone says, tactical training is essential - it's non-negotiable. Understand

that it's not about *solving* the problem - it's all about *recognizing* the solution.
Give the problems a minute or two and then look at the answer. The goal is to

develop pattern recognition, not problem solving skills - to develop a library of
patterns. Tactical vision is trainable - you can teach old dogs new tactics. Really.

Learning openings is hard. You need good advice on which openings are appropriate
for your goals and I'm not qualified to give it. Seek help. Pick some and stick with
them though - change is waste. In the absence of better advice I suggest a
somewhat forcing opening repertoire so you can limit the scope of the problem.

Endgames are important, but my coach has explained how little you actually need to by ToffeePudding
know sub-Master so don't go overboard. Concentrate on mastering the very basics.

Middlegame strategy is the crack cocaine of chess instruction for adults because you
can study it without much pattern recognition and/or concrete analysis skill, but it
won't help you improve in proportion to the time you spend on it, so don't fall into
the trap. You do need some though, and also some ideas about what you should be
thinking about during a game. Learn about pawn breaks! chess books for aspiring kids

Remember, chess is a skill - knowledge itself only gets you so far. You need to play.
And for goodness sake, if you do only one thing, consider your opponent's next
move before you make yours.

Hope that helps a bit and good luck!"

The list author says:
"If you are completely new to chess, then start with this otherwise skip it.
I haven't read this, but I took it from Andre Harding's guide because I
trust his other choices so much. It has been reviewed positively outside
Amazon too."

An alternative to this and the next volume is the software Chess Tactics

the advantage that it rates your tactical skill based on correctness and

The list author says:

"Your third workbook, and it's about the size of the first two combined.

An alternative is the software Chess Tactics for Intermediate Players.

Read this over and over until you can recognize the solutions sub-minute
(takes time and diligence, but no special talent). You're going to be
working with this indefinitely, so it's ok to keep reading down the list."

Chandler

The list author says:

"Ignore the title - this is an excellent book about essential mating
patterns. Without these you cannot conduct an attack (which you'll have
to do sooner or later). Get used to the children's illustrations - reading
their books is less humiliating than losing to them. This and the next two
books can be read concurrently."

The list author says:

"This might be a little advanced for a raw beginner - it assumes some
facility - but it is an incredible explanation of the fundamental endings. If
it's too hard, try Silman. You have to play through these positions in
order to get the benefit though - it's not a passive learning experience.
Ideal material covered by a great teacher."

9. FCO: Fundamental Chess Openings by Paul van der Sterren

The list author says:

"Without a doubt this is the best opening book to start with. It is an
enormous, primarily verbal description of pretty much every opening
there is. It is perfect to survey openings to find one you like (without
buying one for each opening) and it has enough theory to start with when
you do find one. Start here - you won't regret it. It's not for complete
beginners, but no opening book is."

very clearly and methodically.

Start this and the subsequent positional texts one once you have

12. Simple Chess: New Algebraic Edition (Dover Chess) by

Michael Stean

The list author says:

"The best middlegame book there is for sub-Masters. Don't be fooled - it's
not that simple. If you have read Best Lessons and this and get it then
you have other priorities. Read this one after Best Lessons. Then read it
again every six months. Look in the reviews for errata. This one is
definitely straying into the intermediate level, but it's so well written it's
worth a look."
