I am deeply passionate about commercial real estate architecture but grew up in
an environment where such opportunities, especially at a formative age, are rare.
I am passionate about architecture because practicing it enables me to design efficient and multipurpose buildings and facilities to accommodate people with diverse interests and affording capacity while maintaining the quality of the environment. As a citizen of the developing world, I believe commercial real estate needs to be innovative, inclusive, and sustainable to ensure that settlements accommodate people with diverse abilities and are conducive for humans to function or live in. To do so requires nurturing citizens and particularly the youth through providing quality and practice-based education and training to design and oversee such facilities. However, quality and practice-intensive education and training in developing countries like Ethiopia are almost absent due to resource scarcity or resource channeling misfit. It is here where the NAIOP-Drexel Summer Program becomes a vital intervention to expose vibrant but underprivileged students to learn lessons from well-established executives and immersive project activities. This is why NAIOP Greater Philadelphia’s commitment to education, advocacy, and diversity resonates with my mission to contribute to the evolving landscape of commercial real estate. Attending this program will provide me with a unique opportunity to receive individual exposure to local CRE executives, open a door to network with like-minded individuals, and shape my perspective owing to my exposure to diverse opinions, experiences, and engaging group activities. I expect that my exposure and engagement will deepen my comprehension of how to foster inclusiveness and diversity in the field. Beyond academic relevance, my participation in this summer program will practically contribute to envisioning innovatively tailored and inclusive commercial real estate that fits the demands of diverse needs and capacities. I am a future resource aspiring to assume leadership in supporting communities to thrive through innovative and resilient deployment of resources. I have started this journey by winning a head student position, which enables me to voice students’ concerns about the conduciveness of learning environments, classrooms, and related issues of every student. Assuming this role is crucial for me to become a globally aware and empathetic individual. NAIOP’s mission to bring a diverse perspective into the world aligns with my aspirations. I am excited about the opportunity to attend this program and confident that it will serve as an avenue to provide me with the critical mindset to chart my life in commercial real estate and help me envision how to translate my knowledge and skills to positively impact communities.
