GUIDELINES AND GROUND RULES
(CHESS)
GUIDELINES
1. CHESS shall be played as a team and individual competition in both standards,
one team for boys and one team for the girls. A team shall consist of two (2)
players. There shall be separate championship for the boys and girls.
2. The individual Swiss System (4 rounds) shall be adopted. The number of
games per day shall be 2 -2. Awarding of certificate and medal shall be held
after the 4th round.
3. The rank-controlled Swiss shall be used to determine the ID number of each
team. The initial ranking of players will be based on draw lots.
4. The board assignment of the players shall be the prerogative of the coach.
5. A team with only one player in its line up can play for individual event
only and shall not qualify in the Team event.
6. Each team is required to bring at least one chess board.
7. Designation of player number will be determined by draw lots.
8. Players of the same team will be paired in the 1 st round. It is an individual game
regardless of their board assignment. The top two (2) players at the end of 4 th
round of the competition and tie breaks will be declared as Champion and 1 st
Runner-p respectively in each category.
9. The Team Championship is awarded to the team with the highest total
scores of 2 players in the team at the end of the tournament.
10. Players annoying or causing disturbing acts, such as tapping table or
whistling, etc. shall be given warning and shall forfeit their game after
continue to commit such acts three (3) times.
11. Players are not allowed to eat or drink at the playing area while the game
is in progress. A player may ask the permission of the chess official to leave the
playing area for this purpose on his/her own time.
12. Players who have finished their games should leave the playing area
immediately after signing their score sheets and returning the equipment to the
official.
GROUND RULES
1. ILLEGAL MOVES:

Wrong movement of piece
Exposing King to an attack (Often Check)
King remaining under check
Using two hands in making a move
Non-replacement of piece after pawn promotion
o MINOR OFFENCES
Displacement of piece/s on the chess board

2nd Offence - warning
3rd Offence - loss of the game
o MINOR OFFENCES

3. GAME POINTS
Win - 1 point
Draw - 0.5 point
Loss - 0 point
Note: A bye player automatically earns 1 point but if there is a tie at the
end of the tournament, the bye player’s total points will be deducted by
0.5 point.
4. BREAKS

5. DEFAULTING TIME (15 minutes)
6. IRREGULARITIES AND PENALTIES:
a. Mobile phones and other means of electronic communication are strictly
prohibited in the playing area. A player who will violate this rule shall lose
his/her game.
b. A team whose member is giving unsolicited advice or assistance to his
teammate while the games are in progress shall lose their match.
