7. SYLLABUS

English-(1):- English paper will be of S.S.L.C. level and comprises of comprehension


of given passage, precise writing, usage, vocabulary, short essay, communication
skills. For short essay a choice of subjects will be given. Candidates are expected to
keep close to the subject of the essay; to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion and to
write concisely. Passages will be set for summary or precise. Credit will be given for
effective and exact expression.

Kannada-(2):- Kannada paper will be of S.S.L.C. level and comprises of


comprehension of given passage, precise writing, usage, vocabulary, short essay,
translation from English to Kannada. For short essay a choice of subjects will be
given. Candidates are expected to keep close to the subject of the essay, to arrange
their ideas in orderly fashion and to write Passages will be set for summary or precise.
Credit will be given for effective and exact expression.

General Knowledge-(2) Including General Knowledge of current events and of such


matters of every day observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be
expected of an educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific
subjects. The papers will also include questions of Indian History and Geography of a
nature which candidates should be able to answer without special study.

Paper-1
Part-A: TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
Introduction and Terminology, Principles of transportation engneering, Vehicular and
road user characteristics, traffic studies, junctions and signals, traffic control devices;
Highwary alignment and geometric design; Design of flexible and rigid pavements;
Highwary maintenance, highway drainage.
Design of Bridges: IRC loading, Critical loading conditions, Design of RCC deck slabs,
Rcc longitudinal and cross girders.

Part-B: RAILWAYS AND TUNNELS


Railways Introduction, Rails, Sleepers, Ballast rail fixtures and fastenings,- Track
Stress, coning of wheels creep in rails, defects in rails, Geometric design of railways,
gradient, super elevation, widening of gauge on curves-Points and Crossings
(Explanation & Sketches of Right and Left hand turnouts only)
Tunnels: Introduction size and shape of the tunnel, tunnelling methods in soils, tunnel
lining, tunnel drainage and ventilation

Part-C: DOCKS, HARBORS AND AIRPORTS


Docks & Harbors: Types of harbours, tides, wind and waves, break waters, docks,
quays, Transit sheds, warehouses, navigational aids Airports; Introduction to airport
planning and development, Runway Design; Orientation, Wind Rose Diagram,
Runway length, Problems on basic and Actual Length, Geometric design of runways,
Configuration and Pavement Design Principles, Elements of Taxiway Design, Airport
Zones, Passenger Facilities and Services, Runway and Taxiway Markings and
lighting.

Paper-II
Part-A: SOLID MECHANICS
Force Systems, Resultant of coplanar force system, Equilibrium of coplanar force
system, Analysis of trusses, friction, centroid and Moment of Inertia of Plane areas,
Simple stresses and strains, Principal stresses and Mohr’s circle, Elastic Failure
theories, Bending moment and shear force, Bending and Shear Stresses in beams,
Torsion of circular shafts, Columns and struts.

Part-B:STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

Static and kinematic indeterminacy, Deflection of beams by Moment area method,


conjugate beam method strain energy method and unit load method, Rolling loads and
influence lines for statically determinate beams and trusses. Two and Three hinged
arches, cables and suspension bridges, Analysis of beams and frames; Consistent
deformation method, Slope-deflection method, Moment distribution method & Kani’s
method; Analysis of beams, frames and trusses by Matrix methods; Plastic analysis of
beams and frames.

Part-C: DESIGN OF RCC, PSC AND MASONRY STRUCTURES;

RCC:Principles of Limit state design of RC structures, Flexure and serviceability limit


states, Design of beams, Slabs, Lintels, staircases, Columns, Footings, Retaining
walls and water Tanks, Principles of earth quake resistant design.

PSC: Materials, Basic Principles of prestressing Analysis for flexure, Losses of


prestress, Short term and Long term defelctions. Limit state of collapse, Design of
Beams and End blocks.

Masonary Structures:Mansonry units, materials, strength and stability aspects, Design


considerations. Design of masonry walls subjected to axial concentric and eccentric
loads, Design of Laterally and transversely loaded masonry walls.
Paper-III
Part-A: CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
Stone, Brick, Glass, Plastics, Steel, FRP, Ceramics, Aluminium, Timber; Aggregates
Classification, properties and selection criteria; Cement; Types. Composition
Properties, Uses, Specifications and various Tests; Lime & Cement Mortars and
concrete Properties and various Tests; Design of Concrete Mixes Proportioning of
aggregates and methods of mix design: Chemical and mineral admixtures. Centring
scaffolding, shuttering, paints and varnishes.

Part-B: DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES, CONSTRUCTION PRACTIES,


PLANNING & MANAGEMENT

Design of Steel Structures: Principles of Limit state method. Bolted and welded
connections. Design of tension and compression members, Slab base & Gusseted
base beams and beam column connections, Girders Industrial roofs.

Construction Practice, Planning and Management: construction Planning Equipment,


Site investigation and Management including Estimation with latest project
management tools and network analysis for different Types of works; Analysis of
Rates of various types of works: Tendering Process and contract Management,
Quality control, Productivity, Operation Cost; Land acquisition; Labour safety and
welfare.

Part-C: SOIL MECHANICS AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING

Soil Mechanics; Soil formation, Three phase system, Index properties of soils, Soil
Classification, Hydraulics of soils, Stress distribution in soils, Soil compaction. One
dimensional consolidation, Effective stress and pore water pressure, Shear strength of
soils. Soil exploration, Earth pressure and its determination. Bearing capacity-
Theoretical methods and In-situ tests. Stability of slopes by various approaches, Load
carrying capacity of single and group of piles. Ground improvement techniques.

Foundation Engineering Loads for foundation design, Depth of foundation,


proportioning of footings. Geotechnical land structural design of isolated, combined
and raft foundations. Analysis of pile groups. Design of piles and pile cap.

Paper - IV
Part-A: SURVEYING

Introduction of Terminology, Basic Principles of Surveying , Measurement of horizontal


distances, Chain Surveying; compass surveying; introduction to levelling, Reduction
of levelling; Contouring; Plane table surveying, Theodolite surveying, Trigonometric
levelling.
Tachometry. Curve setting Computation of area and volume electronic-Distance
measurements. Hydro graphic surveying.

Modern Surveying: Principles and uses of Electronic Theodolite, EDM, total station
and it accessories. Features of total Station, Principles of Remote Sensing (RS).
Global Position System (GPS). Application of GPS, Maps, Global Information System
(GIS) and its Application.

Part-B; FLUID MECHANICS, HYDROLOGY & WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING

Fluid Mechanics: Introduction and Terminology, Basic properties of fluids. Pressure


and its Hydrostatic pressure on surfaces, Kinematics of fluid flow, Dynamics of fluid
flow, Velocity and Accelerations, Stream Lines, Equation of Continuity, Bernoulli’s
Equation, Irrotational and Rotational Flow, Velocity Potential and Stream Functions.
Continuity Momentum and Energy Equation Naiver Stokes Equation, Euler’s Equation

of Motion. Application to Fluid Flow Problems. Pipe Flow Darcy’s Equation, Losses,
Water hammer, Depth, velocity and Discharge measurements.
Uniform flow in open channels, Non uniform flow, Critical flow, rapid and gradually

Centrifugal Pumps and turbines.

Hydrology & Water Resources Engineering: Hydrologic cycle, Water budget,


Catchment Precipitation types, measurement, intensity duration temporal and spatial
analysis. In filtration, soil moisture, evaporation, transpiration, Groundwater Runoff
components, factors, hydrographs, unit hydrograph, flood estimation.

Part-C: ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

Essentials of water and waste water engineering systems, quantities, sources, water
distribution systems, planning and analysis. Waste water collection. House drainage,
Water and waste water characteristics. Drinking water standards. Unit operation and
processes of water and waste water treatment. Design of treatment units.

Water, Air and Noise Pollution:Effluent standards Disposal of wastewater Stream


sanitation. Water quality indices; Solid waste management Characteristics, treatment
disposal; Air Pollution Control: sources and Characteristics, effects, Control; Noise
Pollution control, measurement & analysis; Hazardous solid waste; classified wastes,
Disposal of Hospital wastes: EIA Introduction case studies.
